Face-Lift for V-Class
After two and a half years of production Mercedes realizes the first extensive face-lift and with this also reacts to the critics on the looks of the interior. The instrument cluster was renewed and the design of the dials changed. Switches and heater controls in the center console were newly designed as well as the steering-wheel and the now chrome-plated inside door handles and the newly illuminated switches for the power windows and the mirror adjustment. A higher-quality interior trim, new fabrics for the seats and new decorative strips, an enhanced adjustment-range on the driver's seat as well as a detection for seat-occupation ((to prevent the passenger's airbag from inflating when seat is not in use)) and an automatical child-seat detection for the passenger's airbag complete this package of measures.

Despite that Mercedes adds two common-rail diesel-engines: From March ((1999)) on customers can choose the 200CDI with 102hp (roughly DM 57.000 ((=USD 28.500 assumed USD 1 = DM 2.00)))
and the 220CDI with 122hp (roughly DM 58.000 ((=USD 29.000))). The already known four-cylinder gasoline-engine V230 was refined especially in view of more spontaneous reaction and better torque development.
