Smart soon as four-seater
Smart-producer MCC wants to get away from negative headlines with new models. So with high pressure works go on on a four-seater and a new, more comfortable chassis. The four-seater - presentation end of year 2000 - shall top the current mini at 50 centimetres in length, the C-pillar remaining as sleek as before. But already in spring of next year the Smart Cabrio shall start ((in Germany)) - with folding roof and plastics rear window. Actual: For more driving security at snow and ice the simple anti-skid system (Trust) of the Smart gets a new function from July ((1999)) on: Giving too much throttle the speed will be reduced ((Trust Plus)). Already delivered Smart will be retrofitted for free.

DaimlerChrysler to buy stake in FIAT

DaimlerChrysler (DC) will buy a stake in Italian carmaker FIAT soon reports German TV station Suedwestrundfunk.
Negotiations are reported to be finished until the end of March 2000. DC is said to secure supplies for the new Smart model generation: The new Smart four-seater shall get engine, transmission and axles from FIAT. Deutsche Bank, major shareholder in DC and holding a 1.87 per cent stake in FIAT, is said to have already created a good base for the capital involvement.
