My duty in Hopewell was particularly satisfying and memorable for a number of incidents. I am very glad you all have an opportunity to get together and retell those sea stories which always get better with time. Following Hopewell, I served on Helena(CA75), ComDesDiv72,
ComCruDesFlot 4, CO, Springfield(CLG7) and ComNavBase Gitmo. So my career was certainly oriented to cruisers and destroyers - which I enjoyed greatly.
I retired in 1973 and have lived in Virginia Beach ever since. Good luck and pleasant times in your reunion.

Faragate ,Idaho 1944. I was in the deck force got seaman 1/c when the laundry job
opened , i would like to know who helped me get promoted . most every one
had points to go state sides . may be they dont have a laundry rate know / I
was captain of the head , does that help? One of the heavy set boatswains
mate allways helped me , dont know his name though . One of my friends
aboard ship was Marlyne Jepson , from Whashing ton Island , wisc, got word
that he passed away two years a go , he was the only one i wrote to from the
Hopewell . keep up the good work sorry i wont be at

Sea Story or Comment ? : I won't forget our 1957 cruise "Down Under" Our first port of call was Wellington, New Zealand. We were the first US Quadrant of ships to enter her harbor since World War II. They were happy to see us, and we were happy to see them also. I came aboard the Hopewell in Feb. 1956 when she was still
in dry dock in Vallejo Calif., after that airplane accident that wipeout the mid ship. I was on her till I was released
from active duty in October 1957. While abroad we went south of the equator, all the way to
Wellington New Zealand, and then to the usual ports in Asia. What a cruise! I came aboard as a FT3 and left her with
the same rank.

Brother, Jerry L. Jory served on the Hopewell during the late 50s or
early 60s and I am interested in contacting some of his shipmates from that
era. Jerry passed away some years ago. I received one response that
indicated that his name could not be found on the ships rosters available to the
person who answered my initial request. The Hopewell use to pull into
the Navy base at Yokosuka. I was stationed at Tachikawa Air Base during
that period and we would pick up him along with some of his buddies and
bring them to Tachikawa for a day or two. I have a number that was on
Jerry's duffle bag or sheets, 471-60-55 I don't know the significance of that
number.
One day, we brought Jerry back to his ship and our big Boxer dog, TAM,
got out of the car and ran up the gang plank and down into one of the ships
tied up there, causing quite a commotion! Jerry would send us a letter
ahead of time to tell us that the ship was due to make port at Yokuska. I would
contact operations at Yokuska to verify the date and time of arrival.
The Hopewell made port there at least 3 or 4 times during that era. I was
stationed at Tachikawa from 1956 to 1961 and again from 1962 to 1966.
We lived in a small house on Tachikawa Air Base both times. In
remembering the two different houses we lived in, the port calls would have been in the
1956 to 1961 time frame, probably during the later part of that tour, say 58
or 59 through 60 or 61. Please help if you can. I appreciate the work
you are doing.

Sea Story ? : I remember one night at sea; I was coming out of engine room to wake up our relief's. I was walking toward the fantail and a wave hit me from behind. The force was so powerful
I was swept off my feet and carried past the last gun mount. When the wave was
past I was clinging to a lifeline by one arm and leg with the other arm and leg hanging over the
ship! I thank God
for the second chance He save me sparing my life that night.

Sea Story ? : Hello USS Hopewell, I just came across your site earlier this evening and it took me back some few years! During Christmas break from Grants Pass high school, Oregon in 1959-60 I went to USNTC as a seaman recruit in the naval reserve. I was aboard for one day in December of 1959. This was a real experience for me and I have not forgotten. It's apparent that I was not a crew member.

| Sea Story ? : I was a member of the crew on the Good ole Hopewell from 60 to early 63. I was a participant of Operation Dominic as a Seaman. Quite a few good memories were associated with that ship. I started as a Seaman and struck for HM, shipping over for the STAR Program. I served 20 years and rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. I'm sure that will shock some of my old shipmates as I was not the best sailor on the ship, But the lessons I learned on the Hopewell gave me good stead and taught me to be a better Man and a Sailor. To all my shipmates on the Hopewell,,Thanks and smooth sailing..
