Long Day's Journey into Night

| A dark, haunting film which delves deeply into the wide spectrum of human emotions. This psychologically challenging movie is about a family in the early years of the 1900's and their tensions, troubles, and griefs. The mother Mary (Hepburn) is a morphine addict, the father James (Richardson) is a miser, the older son Jamie (Robards) is a drunken bum, and the younger son Edmond (Stockwell) is dying of turberculosis. When the movie begins they are shown as a normal American family of the time, but as the story progresses each character is mentally and emotionally dissected and their faults, flaws, and problems are revealed. Guilt is thrown on them all, but none of them are fully guilty. Based closely on the play by Eugene O'Neill, which was based on the playwright's own family. This excellent story, combined with four absolutely superb performances, striking cinematography and skillful direction makes this a great film. |
