Great performance by O'Brien as the famed Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne (proper pronunciation Ka-noote Rock-nuh , common pronunciation Noot Rock-nee). The film traces Rockne's life back to his early childhood in Norway on through to his death in a plane crash in 1931. Rockne, who was also considered a very talented chemist, made the Notre Dame football team famous as a young player when he first used the foward pass. Later, after he became a coach, he built up one the greatest college football teams in history with such famous players as George Gipp (Reagan) and the Four Horsemen of the Apopcalypse. Reagan's part as Gipp is probably his most famous and remembered role in his movie career. O'Brien does well to characterize Rockne's style and methods. The film is probably best remembered for the quote, "Win just one for the Gipper."
