The African Queen

(1951)

African Queen rating

Great classic movie (based on the C. S. Forster novel) set during World War I about a missionary, Rose Sayer (Katharine Hepburn), in Africa whose mission camp is overrun by the Germans. The Germans kill her brother and haul away the natives. She is left alone until Charlie Allnut (Humphrey Bogart), captain of the small riverboat The African Queen, happens by with a load of supplies. Allnut offers Miss Sayer transportation on his boat away from the camp, which she accepts. Once on the boat, though, she refuses just to lay low and wait out the war as Mr. Allnut would like to do. She wants to play a part in the fight and so she hatches up a well nigh impossible plan to find and sink the large German battleship, the Luisa. Together they travel down white water rapids, dodge German bullets and rocks, make their way through small canals and brush, and in the process of it all fall in love with each other. Much of the footage was filmed on location in Africa. The two stars work well together, and the direction by John Huston is very good. Bogart won his only Academy Award for his role as Allnut.
