CAPTAIN NATHAN BALASKO

As a child of six years old, Balasko was traveling with his family
on a transport ship that was attacked by priates. He is taken by
a sadistic pirate captain who kills everyone else on board.
Balasko is brutalized for years by the man until he makes his
escape on Tor-tu'gaa as a pre-teen.

There he lived by his wits and learned to fight and function in
pirate society. A philosophy develops from his observations there
that there are two kinds of people: users and the used. His rage
and emptiness grows as he witnesses more brutality, greed and lust.
Balasko also realizes that he has, beside physical strength and
fighting skill, a raw sensuality that females respond to well.
He's learned to use that to gain an advantage. It is second nature
for him.

At 16, Captain Solarz, recruits him as a grunt on the Serpentine.
Solarz has a similar temperament as the first pirate captain that
Balasko was taken by. A new level of education began on that
ship. Over the next ten years, Balasko fights his way up the rank
and file to the position of first mate.

Each position teaches him a little bit more about Pirate society.
As first mate, Balasko witnessed the Pirate Wars and the growing
pangs from the Agreement. He has learned from the interaction
between the Brethren and the Councilors. Over time, he has stored
this information until he knew that he was ready for his own
command.

Balasko is bright and cunning. He knows when to listen and acts
intuitively. His biggest problem is that he is fueled by rage at
everything and everyone around him. The anger sometimes gets in
his way and causes him to act too rashly. He can get too focused
on the havoc he is causing and sometimes misses the big picture.

Balasko's personality is mercurial. Since he gets a kick out of
what he is doing, he is pleasant and even smiling though the smile
never quite reaches the eyes. He has an explosive temper, but that
is seen in the eyes and heard in the tone of the voice not in
loudness.

There are a few courses Balasko could take: His acts could get
more and more outrageous eventually causing those around him to
destroy him. Experience could hone his natural ability to the
point that he becomes a dangerous renegade. Or, somehow, he could
find a slow path toward redemption.
