HIS KIDS 4-H CLUB CIVIL WAR REENACTMENT UNIT.

Parents, this is a very nice way to make history come alive for yourselves and your children.

We are a very small, family based Christian 4-H Club. At the present time, only 3-4 families are participating in the reenactment aspect of our club, but we are also a traditional 4-H club with several members showing livestock, craft projects, sewing, fine arts, etc.

As a 4-H member interested in being part of the HIS KIDS reenactment group, you must have at least one parent interested in reenacting also. As LIVING HISTORIANS, our group is connected to The Third Battery, First Michigan Light Artillery and The 19th Indiana, Company A. There is a charge to belong to both the artillery battery and the infantry company. Be sure to check out the web sites.

We do a period impression of Civilians attached to an Military camp. At the present, we offer to the public a glimpse of the past by portraying a school/orphanage scenario.

It has been an exciting year for His Kids Reenactors. We have attended several reenactments in Michigan and Indiana - some near, some far. The battery, if you would chose to join, travels to several during the reenactment season. Many are in the State of Michigan, but a few leave the boundaries of this wonderful state - Ohio, Indiana, Georgia and more. Civl War Reenacting is a very large and fast growing hobby that is both fun and educational for all involved.

As some of you know, community service is a part of the 4-H program. We feel, as a club, we could offer no better service to our community (and others) than by making history come alive. The values and manners we are adopting through this opportunity will, as we say in 4-H, help to make the best, better.

Our goal is to be as historically correct as possible - in our dress, mannerisms, shelter, food, and various other ways

A very important part of our history - what makes the United States the United States - will be lost if we chose to forget the past and make the same mistakes in the future.

Two of our reenactment members took time from their busy 1999 4-H fair schedule to attend school at the little red school house found on the Branch County Fairgrounds. Rebecca and Jake portrayed two students at the school under the direction of School Master Cuyler. This enabled them to take another look into the past and was a pleasant day to spend a "hot" afternoon.

Not all days of reenacting are hot - some are rainy, cool, or even cold. Recently the His Kids Reenactors had an experience which made us really understand how different things were in the 1860s. When we attended Linden Civil War Days it was very windy and very COLD. It was easy for us to get into a car or heated building and warm up, but in the 1860s those persons living the actual lives we are portraying, had no warm areas to shelter in. Remembering this gave us a lot to think about.

Hopefully, we will be more prepared the next time we do a late fall event. However, wrapped in quilts and blankets - just scraps of material -we had a good time and as we have learned to say - made memories around the camp fire.

All who have participated in our reenactment unit this year have been awed by the experience. As parents, we have been able to enjoy are children without the pull of television, peer pressure, and the modern world. It has allowed our children to be just what they are - children (of a simpler, gentler era).

We will never forget expressions like: "Grandma, they lied to me in school! They said Abraham Lincoln was dead!" or "Mr. Lincoln, would you please dance with me (asked by a 10-year-old girl; and he did - what a Virginia Reel that was!)."

Our children have been taught and will continue to be taught that each side in the Civil War had legitimate reasons for what it did - be it the need to uphold states' rights or the wish to preserve the Union. Whether a person wore a Confederate uniform or a Yankee uniform did not matter - it was the man (and sometimes the woman) inside of the uniform that made the difference.


As my daughter would say, once we start talking the Civil War, we don't know when to stop. I find this is a common ailment among reenactors. She remarked to her older sister just the other night, "I hope you start reenacting soon just so you can talk the 'Civil War Talk'."


YES! We do do other things in our 4-H club beside Civil War Reenacting - READ ON!

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN QUILTING?

If so, this is another good reason to join His Kids 4-H Club. Many of our projects leaders are experts in quilting and love to pass their "expertise" along to others.

IF YOU HAVE AN INTEREST IN SERVING OTHERS, HAVING FUN, LEARNING NEW THINGS, AND PREPARING YOURSELF TO BE THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW. MAKE PLANS TO ATTEND HIS KIDS 4-H MEETINGS. WE MEET THE FIRST TUESDAY OF EACH MONTH; 6:30 P.M.; Coldwater, Michigan.
