Rescued Family History Items

One of my hobbies is dabbling in family history.
From that hobby sprang another interest. Now I like rambling around in flea
markets, yard sales and online auctions picking up family history items of others.
Oh, I'm STILL looking for that ever elusive item from one of my families but in
the mean time, I pick up someone else's (that way there's no chance it will
be discarded).
I like to call it "rescuing" an item.

It started out with rescuing photos with names. Then, it turned into photos
and letters
and bibles
and certificates
and scrapbooks
and . . . well, I think you get the message.
As this collection grew I thought "What use is it to have all this in my file
cabinet if noone else sees them but me? How could I possibly find someone who
relates to all of these?" So, I got a scanner, put them to disk and am
sharing them thru this site.

If you have someone's possible family history item laying around your house
PLEASE consider listing it on the message board. Posting the information on
the message board lets someone else know that you have it besides you!

You'll find below my collection of deeds, letters, bibles, legal papers, photos, and hard to tell what else...
Please take a minute and browse thru to see if there is something from your family. I've tried to keep this page in a simple format for those with older browsers.

If you can't open and see the actual scanned document, e-mail me and I'll try something else. If you find and would like to re-claim an item from your family's history all I ask in return is reimbersal of original cost of an item plus postage. (Of course, you also have to prove relationship)

IT'S HERE ! . . . . DO YOU KNOW ME? . . . .
If you have a picture with two or more people and you know at least one of them . . maybe someone else knows the other people!
Here's a place to share it . . .

Boice Family Record

This Bible found at H & S Trading Post in Marietta OH.
Cover is missing. I will put into italics the parts that are in the mother's handwriting and leave regular type what was written by someone else (I believe to be Vada May). First page with writing on it: Presented to Vada May Boice by her Mother, Jan 1st 1899. Monday 6:40 a.m. Feby 3 - 1906 - [[When I bought this bible I thought that was all the information in it. BUT. . . AFTER I got home I found a very thin paper stuck inside, near the back,
in the map section of the bible!!]]
It Stated: Family Record Manerva Died 6:40 Sat Feb. 3, 1906. or Elizabeth buried Mon. Feb. 5. 06 Lizzie Anne FULTON. Born Nov. 18th 1856. John Milton BOICE Born, March 1st 1856. Married by Rev. M. MOSES. February 17th, 1879. David Allison BOICE B. Dec 7, 1871. Died June 27th 1882. Nevada May BOICE B. Oct 29th, 1881 Married Sept 30, 1905 Blanche Edith BOICE B. - Dec 13th 1885. Mabel Wells BOICE B. - Aug 23rd 1887. Married Feby 10 '04 Baby Kathleen Feb 8 - 1905 John Pearcy BOICE B. - Nov 21st, 1893. D. - June 20 ' 1894. Other than the front cover missing and usual wear-n-tear for a bible of this apparent age, it is in good condition. The paper this information is written on appears to me it may be glued in the back. Judging from the handwriting and what is written in this bible I'd say that the Mother was Manerva BOICE.

When love has bound the heart.
'Tis hard, so hard to speak, the words,

Dearest father we have laid thee
In the peaceful grave's embrace,
But thy memory will be cherished
'Till we see thy heavenly face.

Recent Deaths ---------

John Preston. PITTSBURGH, June 11 --(Special)-- John Preston died at the City hospital in Washington, Pa., Monday. Mr. Preston was 73 years old and perhaps no man engaged in the oil industry had a wider acquaintance among operators, more particularly the old guard who be- came identified with the business in its early days. For the past 20 years he had resided in Washington and as one of the first to embark in the development of the ter- ritroy in that county. Prior to that time he had operated in the Western Pennsyl- vania fields and was very successful. Of late years he had not taken an active part in development work, but had given his attention to his oil properties in Washington County, in which he was as- sociated with W.C. McBride, formerly of that place, but now a resident of St. Louis. Mr. Preston was generous to a fault and was highly esteemed by all of his acquaintances. His genial nature made him one of the most companionable men and in his death the oil industry loses one of its men of greatest integrity. Mr. Preston was born in Rochester, N.Y. and engaged in the oil industry in Butler County in 1861. He followed the trend again to the southwest in southeastern Ohio and West Virginia. In his day he was one of the most dar- ing operators and never hesitated to back his convictions to the limit. Mr. Preston never married. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Julia A. Granger and Mrs M. Dodd, both of Rochester. Mr Preston was a devout Catholic and the funeral services were held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, Pa., this morning. The body will be taken to Rochester, N.Y., where interment will take place Friday morning.
