Disclaimer: the first two generations above John Claye, The Grenadier, of whom many are descended, and some descendants
 included here has not been proven nor should any inference that all of the information shown here for them is true or credible. 
The early sources listed here only remain a possibility and are not complete by any means.  Some are more credible than others.  
Any one wishing to add sources, additions, or corrections are welcome to contact me.

All my known sources have been included for any researchers wishing to follow-up on them.  Perhaps some day Clay family 
researchers will be able to prove the parentage of our John Claye.  Until then, many questions and mysteries will remain.  If there 
are known discrepancies with my information or additions that I did not have, it will be noted in red text along with who provided 
the additional information.

1.      John Claye, Esq. m. Mary Carlton, b. England, d. England, (dau of William Carlton died
          1538  Eng.)  John died 16 May 1632, England. William Carlton was said to be a 
          servant to Henry VIII. "Francois Benin (Francis Benning) His Descendants and Allied 
          Families" by Eva Harding Benning (1981) MO p. 56 (use great caution with this book 
	  as she does not list her sources for the information)

In an unnamed book by Ruth Clay Burrell of Amarillo, TX, she states that Sir John Claye 
(1558 - 1632, a Coal Baron of Wales, knighted by Queen Elizabeth I, son of John Claye of 
Gloucester; who in turn was the son of John Claye of Derbyshire; who was the son of 
another John Claye, knighted by Edward IV in 1471 at the Battle of Tewksbury.
Children:

1.     Richard Claye b 1685, the oldest son, remained in Monmouthshire, Wales to inherit 
       the title and estate.  Two of his sons came to America.
          a.     Frances Claye who came to Northumberland Co., VA in 1649 and his wife 
                    came in 1652. Their children were:
                         1.     William Claye who arrived in 1659 (?)
                         2.     Daniel Claye who arrived in 1652.    
          b.     Edward Claye who came to Northumberland Co., VA in 1659.

2.     Captain John Claye b 1587, d 1639, arrived in the "Treasurer."

3.     William Claye b. 1589, came to Charles City County, VA in 1638. Issue unknown.

          VA; married 1612 in England), m. Ann ___, (Possibly Ann Nichols, b. 1594 in England,
          d. pre 1660 in Charles City) d. VA. John died VA, buried: VA, Emigrant Ancestor; VA in 
          1613; 1609.  Came to VA 16 Feb 1613 aboard the "Treasurer", called "the Grenadier."
          Ann came to VA on the "Anne" in 1623

                                        additional son, John Claye Jr., b. 1624, d. 1647, Md.
                                        1645 in Charles City to Elizabeth ___ and they had a son
                                        named John. 1645, d. 1667, married 1687.          
                                John b. 1614 in England, married Elizabeth ____ possibly France.
                                   She later married John Wall and John Tate. She was b. 1615
                                   and d. 1686 in Charles City. John Claye lived on the North 
                                   side of the James River, he was born in 1615 and died 1663 in
                                   Charles City, VA. John and Elizabeth's children were:

                                        1.     William b. 1634, d. 1663, will probated 22 Oct
                                               1663, in Charles City, VA. He married Emlin Wall.

                                        2.     Charles Clay b. 1638, married Hannah Wilson.

          of Swift Creek, Henrico / Chesterfield County, VA) d. 7 Aug 1777, VA.  Henry died 
          3 Aug 1760, of the "Nattles", in Chesterfield County, VA, buried: on ("The Raells")
          his farm near Swift Creek. One source says he collapsed and died at the dinner table.
          A source believes the family cemetery near Richmond, was bulldozed a few years ago and
          a soccer field for a high school put there. The tombstone of this Henry is said to be 
          leaning up against one of the school buildings.

     D.A.R. Patriot (P.S. VA.). 1820 will #5 p. 171 Bedford co, VA clk of circuit court, will
     dated 12 Nov 1819, proved Bedford co 27 Mar 1920. 
     Dennis/Smith: "Marriage Bonds - Bedford co., VA 1755-1800"; Buford: "Bedford co., 
     VA Index of Wills 1754-1830"; "Campbell Chronicles and Family Sketches" p. 393-396; 
     Episcopalian minister of St Anne's Parish 1769-1784; had sons throw rocks on grave for 
     every sin they committed that he did not know of, the pile is 12' high, 20' long;

     Editha: Wurts: Magna Charta p. 2095. Her tombstone reads: "Editha Clay died 3rd June 1838 
     aged 61 years 47 days. This monument is erected to the memory of the Best of Mothers by

        ?(1748-1819) John died 1781, Hanover co., VA. A Baptist minister; He was the father  
        of the Statesman and Orator, Henry Clay. Elizabeth Hudson m 2 Henry Watkins in 1782. 
        Both born in VA. The couple had seven children and settled in Versailles, KY, where
