Early Warner Line Warner Family <META NAME="keywords" content="Warner, Green Mountain Boys, Wait Warner, Annis Baxter, Woodruff, Camfield, AMES, Calkins">

John Warner & Margaret (Unknown)

John Warner (b. 1615 England) married Margaret (unknown) (approx. 1638). Ancestry.com gives a great deal of history on the Warner family. John and Margaret are shown to have 4 known children. John died in 1679 in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut. It appears we may have descended from their son, another John Warner. There is a lot of Warner and related families histories found in one of Rootsweb's pages on Vermont. My link here will be on their seach page. Much as usual is on Seth Warner, but many other histories on the family are in there as well. Enter a name or place and they will lead to various parts of the book.

This son, John Warner was born about 1639 in Hartford, Hartford, CT. also to an Unknown woman. Six known children are listed in their family line. He was listed as a freeman. He died (approx. March 1 1706/07) in Farmington, Hartford CT. If we follow his family down, we descended from their son, Ebenezer Warner.

Ebenezer Warner was born about 1677 in Farminton, Hartford, CT. He married Martha Galpin (b. Mar 1684/85) in Woodbury, Litchfield, CT. They married on December 19, 1704 again in Woodbury, Litchfield, Ct. This record shows 10 children. Ebenezer was a Captain of the Militia. He was a doctor and they show that he was buried in Warner Hill Cemetery. He died April 26, 1755 in Woodbury. Still coming down the line we descended from their son, Benjamin Warner.

Benjamin Warner was born on May 6, 1709 in Woodbury, Litchfield, CT. He also became a doctor like his father. He married three times. He first married Frances Farrell (no other info shown), Then he married Silence Hurd (b. Jan 1715/16 in Woodbury, Roxbury, Litchfield Co., CT.) They married on December 16, 1736 in Roxbury, Litchfield, CT. Three of their sons, Daniel, Seth, and John were active in the "Green Mountain Boys" which fought the efforts of New York to dispossess them, and later became a regiment in the Continental Army in the Revolution. Seth Warner was its Colonel. There seems a variation of how many children Benjamin and Silence had. 11 are listed but other records show 8. Our line seems to have descended from their son John Warner mention above regarding the "Green Mountain Boys" as we often had thought the connection with this family was. Before his death, Benjamin also married a third time to Frances Fern on August 2, 1787. No other information was given on her.

John Warner was born on May 29, 1745 in Woodbury, Litchfield, CT. He married 2 times. His first wife was (Unknown) Hurlburt. By her he had at least 4 known children. He then married Joanna Ames. They are shown to have had 9 children and this is where I think our connection to the family begins. John served as Captain in Lt. Herrick's Company Regiment of Vermont Rangers 1777-80. His second wife received a pension 1845. He went to Vermont with his parents in 1765 and was with the Green Mountain Boys at the Battle of Bennington. I will list the children of this second marriage as this is where I had believed we connected. I believed we had descended from their son, Truman Warner, but this whole thought has changed, as we now know our family came down through Wait Warner. John Warner died on July 2, 1819 in St. Albans, Franklin, VT and he is buried there.

The children of John & Joanna Ames Warner are as follows:

  1. Amos Warner
  2. Wait H. Warner b. 1780
  3. Gideon Warner b. 1780
  4. William Warner b. 1782
  5. Benjamin Frye Warner b. 9 Jul 1786 in Bennington, VT.
  6. Junia Warner b. Abt. 1788 in VT.
  7. Sarah Warner b. May 12, 1794 in Essex, Chittenden Cty, VT
  8. Levi H. Warner b. 1800 in VT.
  9. Truman Warner b. December 1778 in Swanton, VT.

The year 2006 has finally cleared up for certain which of John's sons was the father of our Junia Warner. It brought me into contact with many wonderful new cousins and the fun part is many are here on the West Coast so maybe some day I will meet them! One of these cousins was Alice and her 2 historic papers will help many families unite, so will show what she has first on Wait's family. These papers came from "Aice's great-grandmother (daughter of John & Elmina Warner Hedding), Frances, who began doing genealogy in the late 1800's. She had compiled a family tree of the Heddings and their allied families which includes the Warner family. It is a real family treasure because she still had contact with many relatives who were born in the early 1800's and who still had recollections of these names." With this said I will begin now to enter what she shows for the family of Wait H. & Annis Baxter Warner. I hope in time too to add Annis Baxter's ancestry which we recieved today from Linda. Oh happy days!

Wait & Annis children are:

  1. Mrs Electa Warner Merrick
  2. Lyman Warner (father of Edith, Fanny & Sara whom we have pictures of)(Tom & Marilyn's gg grandfather)
  3. Mrs Junia Caroline Warner Woodruff b. 1808-9 (my ggg grandmother)
  4. Gideon John Warner
  5. Mrs Ada Maria Warner Vantine
  6. Mrs Miranda Louise Warner Hedding(Linda's ggg grandmother)
  7. Mrs Lucetta Warner Spencer
  8. Mrs Elmina Warner Hedding (Alice's gg grandmother)
  9. Benjamin Franklin Warner
  10. Amos Washington Warner (Benjamin & Amos are twins)(Harry's gg grandfather)
  11. Alphonse S Allen Warner
  12. Truman Warner

Wait Warner married a second time to Mrs Margaret Minkler Warner. Their children as noted are:

  1. Mrs Sarah Malvina Warner Element
  2. Vanburen Warner
  3. Mrs Augusta Warner Everest

Combined pictures of Fannie, Edith, and Sara Warner who are 3 of Lyman Warner's daughters. When I received the picture of Edith below I thought she would be a niece to our Junia and when I heard that she was one of Lyman's many children and received the picture back combined with the other 2 girls I knew this was a good match.

My earlier work led me to believe that Truman Warner, son of John Warner was Junia's father, but it has been shown and proven now through many records found by all my new found cousins that Truman's line was the wrong one, but I will try to edit this so that I can leave some of his history here for his descenants to find and see the bigger picture as has been shown to me. Ancestry led me to some of this earlier history and provided me with the name of a book which I now have written on the "Descenants of John Warner of Farmington" compiled by Davis P. Warner. It is a wonderful book but it is missing our particular line, but it is helping me to find other relatives.

In the 1850 NY Census and in the 1880 Michigan Census they show that Junia Warner's Father was born in Vermont, which Wait was. It also showed that her mother was born in Canada and I have leared that Annis Baxter was born in Montreal.

For those who would still like to see Truman's line I will leave this information in my pages for you. Keep in mind this Truman Warner is the one who is a son of John Warner. Many names are repeated in the Warner families.

Truman married Anna Ingalls (b. Dec 4, 1790) and had two children by her.

  1. Lucy Warner b. May 22, 1811
  2. Truman Harrison Warner b. July 15, 1816 in Durham, Ontario, Canada

Truman then married Polly Calkins (b. Jan 9, 1779). They married in 1798. Their 3 children show are:

  1. Reuben Warner b. July 16, 1799
  2. Bronson Warner b. October 1, 1801 in Durham, Ontario, Canada
  3. Anna Warner b. January 6, 1804.

It shows Truman died up in Durham, Ontario, Canada on May 15, 1822. There is further information on Truman's sister Junia (the older Junia) that she lived in Ohio and died there in 1860. I have lost sight of this piece of information, but remember seeing it, so can not say for sure if this is accurate.

As you will see on my following pages, our Junie(Junia)Warner married to Nelson Woodruff. Please note that 3 of their 3 children's names were Wait, Amos, and Truman. It is known that Wait and Amos both married in Medina, Ohio. As I had hoped, by sharing my earlier information in my webpages it has brought many new cousins and answers to the Warner family line. A cousin in Florida has some of our old Woodruff history and pictures. She also had in her possession a picture (tin type) of an Edith Warner. We wondered if this might be a niece of our Junia or some such relative. Thanks to Linda, we have learned that she is a daughter of Lyman Warner, Junia's brother. She had copies of two of Edith's sisters pictures (Sara & Fanny) which she found in the work of Tom Camfield, "History/Genealogy of Family Camfield". Tom wrote this book in his search for Lyman Warner, his ancestor. Tom led me to Edith's granddaughter whom I am so pleased to find. I wrote to her tonight for the first time. I will try to add Edith's picture in here, but need to save this and go back out to see how I saved it as.

Edith Warner, daughter of Lyman Warner. Niece of Junia Warner.

As I noted, much of the earlier Warner history is in Ancestry.com and there is some also in Familysearch.com Familysearch did not provide as much information, but did give me two people to contact which I did immediately. When I wrote, I learned that one was deceased and did not get a response from the other one. The history on Wait Warner's family came from his many wonderful descenants. Linda worked tirelessly on many of the family lines and sent a sea of information. Harry led me to everyone and Alice provided the missing key to connect Junia to her family. Tom's work on the Warner family and the pictures from his book provided so many answers. I love you all!!!
