BAKER, CHARLES JOSEPH, merchant, manufacturer, was
born May 28, 1821, in Baltimore, Md. It was through his efforts
that the Union railroad and tunnel were constructed; and,
having bought control of The Baltimore Gazette, he was
enabled to advance reform movements. He died Sept. 23,
1894, in Baltimore, Md.
