THE NAME
According to the book English
Surnames by P. H. Reaney, the name "Hine" and its variations, Hines,
Hyne and Hynes probably originates from the Middle English 'hine' meaning
servant. An example given is Robert le Hyne of Enysham in 1240.
The name "Hind" and its variations, Hinde, Hindes, Hynd and Hynds also
appears in many parrish records. Its meaning comes from the Old English
word 'hind' which refers to a female deer. It is possible that the
name "Hine" may have evolved from "Hind" by the dropping of the 'd'.

THE COAT OF ARMS
The descripton of the Hine coat
of arms as given in Burke's General Armory is as follows:
"Silver, on the middle third engrailed blue 3 gold anchors
in upper portion a greyhound running black. On a silver tortoise
an eagle rising holding in the beak a sprig of heath gazing at the sun
all in natural color." The color silver represents nobility,
serenity and peace. Blue represents loyality, fidelity and truth.
Gold denotes valor and honor. The source of the surname seems to
be related to occupation associated with the English meaning "one who was
a domestic servant". There appears to be no motto recorded with the
Hine coat of arms. Since mottos are believed to have originated as
battle cries, it is doubtful that a motto such as "At your service,
your Grace" would stike much fear into the hearts of one's opponents!

HINES
MILFORD COLONY*
The Connecticut
branch of the Hine family's roots began in Milford colony around 1646 with
Thomas. Considered one of the principal after planters of the colony,
he resided in the northeast section of town on 3 acres of land. He
and his wife Elizabeth had 9 children between the years 1653 and 1663.
Their names include: Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Samuel, Alice (who
died young), Alice (the second), William, George and Stephen.
THOMAS AND THE MOHAWKS
The town of Milford
lived in fear of the local indians. At one point in 1646 an attempt
was made to burn the town down when the countryside was set on fire.
This hostility resulted in posting watch guards around the palisades.
Two years later the Milford indians foiled a "surprise" attack by the Mohawk
Indians. The retreating Mohawks left behind their dead comrades as
well as several who had been taken prisoner. Thomas Hine came across
an unconscious Mohawk, fed him and returned him to a safe location.
It is written that "for this act of mercy the Hine family were ever after
venerated and respected by the Mohawks".
(Source: Works Projects
Administration/Milford Tercentenary Committee. History of Milford
Connecticut 1639-1939. Bridgeport, 1939.)
* The land for Milford colony was purchased from
the Paugussett Indians in Feb. 1639. The First Church of Milford
was created in Aug. 1639. The new settlers began their move to Milford
that fall coming from New Haven colony. In Oct. 1643 Milford became
part of the New Haven colony which in turn became part of the Connecticut
colony in May 1665.
