What's Your Hedgehog's Name?

"Pages to Share the Name of Your Hedgehog(s)"

My hedgehogs name is Beastly. He's an albino and he has a bit of an attitude. That, plus his red eyes make Beastly the perfect name (not to mention the quills!) He's really a sweetheart though so his name is also an oxymoron. Future hedgehogs will be called Urchin, Brillo, Keeper, Cicso, and Iglesia, in that order if I ever get that many. :)

Junebug was born June 1st 1999 & named June. When we adopted her in August she was so little & was as cute as a bug. Thus she was renamed Junebug, which still fits her to a T.

Mistress Beatrix - Because any name which ends with an X sounds sort of naughty, and she was pricking me so often (and occasionally biting) when I first got her I figured she was a dominatrix as she liked to inflict pain.
Lady Sally - a rescue. She was already named Sally but I added the Lady bit in order that she didn't feel inferior to Bea. Sally is named after Lady Sally from the Spider Robinson " Callahan" series.

I don't have a hedgehog, yet. But when I do I am going to name it Tribble. Why, because I am a trekky. On a star trek episode they had an invasion of cute, little, fuzzy, animals on a space station that remind me of hedgehogs.

Maceon - - - huffy pufffy little boy...... sooo - thought of a mace - mid-evil weapon... and added to it a little,......
Mr. Belvedere - - - -because he looks very much and acts very much like Mr. Belvedere from the t.v. show.

I named my hedgie Prickle Boo. I wanted to name him Prickles but he was a class pet so we had to vote. The name that my student's choose was Boo. So hence, to me, he was named Prickle Boo. I did call him Boo for short (although my dad thought I was saying Poo, go figure, hehehe)

Needles: She was my first hedgie and she felt like a bunch of little needles picking into my hands when I picked her up. So hence the name Needles
Pickles: He tips the scales at 2.2lbs and looks like a big dill pickle you see in the barrels. He also has a bitter attitude sometimes, so he was crowned Pickles.
Snickers: She is a rescue and sweet as candy.

My name is Matthew. My wife and I just got our first heggie and upon getting her I looked at her and the name Shelby popped out. To this day it just fits.

The first night we brought our hedgie home, I was holding him in my arms and he was cuddling in my elbow. Well, he soon found the top pocket on my overalls that I happened to be wearing. He thought it would be fun to go into the pocket, so he did--and he got stuck! When we tried to pull him out, he puffed up and his quills stuck into the material of my overalls. We eventually had to cut the pocket to get him out. And this is how our hedgie got his name--Pockets! :)

I have had my hedgehog for five days and I just love her! She is six months old and I named her Prickle. I guess I don't have to explain why!

Submitted by: Boyd (01/24/2000)
My name is Boyd and my little feller is named Harley D. Hedgehog. As you might think, I have been riding motorcycles since I was a young lad and My favorite cycle is my restored 1966 Harley Davidson ElectraGlide. My little buddy also likes riding with me. Usually in the zippered pocket of my leather jacket. Sometimes he even leaves me little surprises,(more like frequently). I wouldn`t take anything for the wee critter for we spend many enjoyable and relaxing times together.

My hedgehog is named Pokey. It is actually quite fitting because that is what they are. He is an albino and is such a mommas hog. He loves to cuddle and play with me. He isnt all that friendly with strangers, but he loves his mommy! My friend also got a hedgehog and decided to name her's Smokey. We think Pokey and Smokey sound cute together since we plan on breeding them and making them a happy little family.

When it was first decided that I would get a hedgehog, (a gift from my father), I found myself in search of the perfect name. I love gothic writing, especially Bram Stoker's Dracula. In the story, one of Dracula's minions is a former solicitor named Renfield who is sent by his firm to Transylvannia to help a certain Count Dracula secure various properties in England. After an extended stay with the count, Renfield returns to London a deranged man, who now believes that by eating bugs his life will be extended by each life he consumes. So....what better name for a bug-consuming pet of a fan of Dracula than Renfield.
As for THE WINGNUT...well...it's a name I've always enjoyed, both literally & figuratively and I had been toying with it as a pet name for a while. The evening of the day I made the decision to go for my second master, I turned on the television to a documentary about a man who lives with wolves and low and behold, the lead wolf's name was Wingnut. It was fate! And so The Wingnut came into my life and has certainly lived up to his name in the many months since.
BUG came into my life via Lenny Groves. He's a little white guy with deformed feet who came from a litter of seven. Because of his colour, he was originally named Snowfall but I think that Lenny and I were the only ones who could remember that name...to everyone else he seemed to be a Snowball or Snowman, (he certainly looks like a snowman with those white quills and coal black eyes!). In the course of his first few weeks with me I let him interact with the other two. Renfield would have nothing to do with him and visa versa...but with The Wingnut, it was another story. He was in love and would not leave The Nut alone. So I started to refer to him as Nut's little bug. He also has a way of moving that reminds me of a beetle...darting here and there on his little feet...so he soon officially became BUG. And he, too, has more than lived up to his name.
And so, that's the story of The Terrors names.

I don't have a hedgehog yet, but when I get one (it'll be a girl) her name'll be Izzy! I read a book called "A Rat's Tale" and the most beautiful rat there was Isabel, or Izzy. Why I used a rat's name will ever be a mystery...

Although my hedgie has passed away (on Jan. 1/2000, what a way to start the Y2K, sniff!), I wanted to share her name with you. Perhaps someone out there will name their girl hedgie after her and she will live on! My hedgie's name was Nichimoose(knee-chee-moose) which is Cree for "sweetheart". Being Metis, I wanted an indian name for my prickly one and Nichimoose fit the bill. I hope someone out there likes it and passes it on.
I have since adopted a little 1.5 yr old girl hedgie named Sweetpea and we are well on the way to being fast friends!

Hey, my hedgehogs name is Kujo. I just got finished watching the movie CUJO the day before I bought him, and when I picked him up, he gave me an evil look and huffed alot. He looked like he was possest by the devil (and if you've ever seen the movie CUJO...), so the name seemed to suit him well.

If I can convince my mom that hedgehogs don't smell, I can get one and when I do,I'm naming her Brendice. Brandy for short. I`'m naming her after my Aunt Brendice. What if its a boy? Then I'll stick with plain old Brandy.

When I got Mr. Prickles he was a the masscot for a new Beanie store that had just opened up here in town, and TY had just releasted the Beanie Baby called Prickles the Hedgehog, so his name really fit, and he was the hit of the store when he came to visit, I bet alot of people bought the Beanie Baby just because they saw how cute Mr. Prickles was.

The newest addition to our family is our 1 1/2 year old hedgehog named Velcro and he's the sweetest thing. He is very playful but most of the times just wants to cuddle. You can sit there watching tv and all he'll do is get comfy and fall to sleep in your arms. It the cutest thing!!!!

My hedgie's name is Henrietta, mostly because I like the alliteration. But the name really fits her - she's such a little lady!

My Fiancé and I have one female Hedgie named Haley. We named her before we even got her and we chose that because "Haley the Hedgie" had kind of a nice ring to it. She is a very petite, tiny little girl, but I'm sure she's not done growing yet(she's 4 months old) Next Tuesday we are going to be getting another Female--a rescue this time--and her name is already Zephyr.

I have named all my hedgies with names from "Watership Down" and "Tales from Watership Down", my favorite books. My first hedgie, a male, is named Thlayli, and my first female was Thinial. The other hedgies I have gotten after that are Hazel, Fiver, Hyzenthalay, and Thethinthaunnang.

My first hedgie's name was d'argent (with a soft 'g'), sometimes called d'arg. The actual name, Dargent, was the name of a silver dragon in the dragonlance novels. Argent is also the latin word for silver. When I first looked at this adorable baby hedgie, I thought her fur looked silver more than white. and since I was looking for a fantasy name for her, the name of a silver dragon was chosen.
Twinkle came with the name, and I didn't want to rename her, so she stayed that way.
On to the new baby (which will be coming in another six weeks!!!!)
My mom was at the pet store picking up stuff for the dog and she was squeaking one of those stuffed hedgie dog toys (they gronk instead of squeek). On the tag of the hedgie it said his name was Booda (like the god, only spelled different!). So my mom thought it would be a great name for a hedgie (since it came from a stuffed hedgie!)
I've been entertaining the thought for awhile, and while I like it, felt it doesn't fit with a female hedgie... unless she's a *big* girl. and from what I know of (speaking to the breeder that has my baby at the moment), my girl is the smallest in the litter. So i'm thinking the name doesn't fit.
Instead, I come up with a slight variation to booda... it's Booja (pronounced boo-ya). I'm thinking I've heard this word before, so I do a net search. I come upon it at a strange website, where it says "NOONGAR LAND COUNCIL CLAIM GNAALA KARLA BOOJA". It's on a page for the Noongar Aboriginal tribe in Australia. So I emailed the anthropologist who's in charge of the project, asking her what booja means. I'm told it's a Nyungar word that means land/ground/earth. Well since hedgies are so close the ground, it's kind of fitting!

My first two hedgies (both males) were wild South African hedgehogs. I got them through a rescue and raised them from tiny babies (bottle-fed every four hours) to adults.
The first was named Paddington, after Paddington bear. I just thought it was a very cute name for a very cute little hedgehog! Paddington was a sweetheart before he went into hibernation (since they were wild the hedgies did hibernate for a couple of months in winter (June-July)). Then he woke up with hormones raging and always tried to fight with the other one. I had to separate them for the last few months.
The second was named Pooh, after Winnie-the-Pooh, because I love Winnie-the-Pooh! He was rather indifferent before his hibernation, but he was a sweetie after he woke up. He always tried to get onto Paddington's good side, but to no avail. I could easily pick up and handle both hedgehogs. I just had to keep my fingers out of the range of their mouths, though, because they did bite! They were released back into the wild when they were a little over a year old. I hope they had long and happy lives and had lots of little hedgehog babies!
Then I moved to Canada, and I wasn't able to live without hedgehogs for very long. I got a little girl from an ad in the paper. Her name is Pandora, just because I like the name. She is very huffy but when you win her over she's quite a character. I got a second little girl from Bryan Smith. Her name is Sweet Pea. She is the sweetest, cuddliest little girl I've ever seen. Loves to cuddle and give kisses. She lives with Pandora and they are great friends. And it's true what they say... once you've had hedgehogs, you can't live without them!

First...Spiketta, she was my first hedgie, a rescue named Spike, because they thought she was a he. She passed away after a long illness in July, I miss her a great deal. Elbow Baby, (a gift from Tig Means), named because she has a deformed rear foot, I call her El or Ellie for short. A real sweety who recently became the mom of 6 little sqeakers. She's a great mom! It's both of ours first litter (and hopefully last). The dad is Regis, named after Regis of the Millionair show, cause I think he's cute like Regis Filbin, with little dark eyes and grayish brown hair...HA! I plan to keep one female of the litter, 'cause Ellie misses Spiketta too.

I just looked all around your web site and now realize how much I miss my hedgie who seemed to have cancer, and I had to take her to be put down. I cried so hard! I adopted her and she had had 2 previous owners. The first one wasn't very good to her and she was always hissing and popping. Her name when I got her was Mrs. Popples! I didn't see this name on your lists, so I thought I would tell you. It sure did fit her personality! She liked to drink water from a tiny glass dish, but sometimes tipped it over. She also liked to chew on my husbands' hair and lick where I put 'Obsession' on my wrist! Then the anointing began! I do miss her and hope to get another one someday, a hand-raised, more tame one that hasn't been abused. She even had some of her quills cut! But we spoiled her and she liked us a lot.

I call my little girl Penny. It's short for Penelope". I also think of it as a nickname for Pincushion. That's what she was like when I first got her. Now, Penny is her perfect name because she always turns up (and loves on me) like a new "penny"! I have been fortunate enough to have had her for almost 6 years. We always celebrate her birthday at the end of October!

I named my hedgehog Montana before I knew whether it was a male or female. I figured that name was fairly sexually ambiguous, and I just like it, for some reason. Anyway, the name's very fitting because she speeds around my room without getting stopped by the big bad traffic official (me), and when she does, she fusses until she gets away.

I have two hedgehogs and their names are:
Thistle - because, although a thistle is beautiful it also hurts when you get pricked by the little thorns.
Needles - because when I first acquired her, I could barely pick her up as it was indeed like needles pricking your skin.
As of late, both my girls no longer hurt me with their quills when picked up, but the names sure suited them when they were little and afraid of people.
I am planning on getting another hedgehog in January or February and am planning on calling him/her Echo. Just thought it would be a neat name and also figured it will be my 3rd hedgie so it would be an echo of the first two.

My first hedgie is named George. He has no middle name as my grandfather did. Also he is named George because of George on Seinfeld - "George is getting angry!" George - mine - is always huffing - he purrs and whistles once in a while. My second hedgie is named Gina Livorna. She's named Gina because you can put George and Gina together and get 'Georgegina' - her middle name is for an exit off I-680 in the Bay Area of California - I always liked the name of it.

I got Skye when she was 3 months old and quite the huffy, popping, snorting and hissing beastie. I started out calling her shy and it just ended up developing into shy skye, then just skye. It also seemed that when the word skye was whispered she settled down so it seemed like it was made for her.
I am getting another baby on Wednesday and her name is whysper, because she seemes to warble very quietly all the time.

I first saw Bernie in a pet store right before Christmas 1999, and I knew I just had to have him from the moment I laid eyes on him. He had been special ordered by a lady who had to back out at the last minute. He was just barely old enough to be separated from his mother. When I finally got to see his face, he just looked like he should be named Bernie. I did some research, and when Bernie was still in the pet store the following March, I finally brought him home. I walked up to the counter and told the clerk that I wanted to buy the hedgehog. He immediately woke up, turned around and stared at me.... I guess he wanted to see who he was going to live with!

I think I sent you the names of my herd: Thistle, Nettles, Heather - named for Scottish/Celtic flowers and herbs.
Dan and Lumpy were named by previous owners before coming to me as rescues. Dan was named after his people Dad who always wanted a son but so far has been blessed with a people daughter. Dan (the hedgie) came to me when Dan (the human) was being sent to Puerto Rico courtesy of the US Navy. PR would not let hedgie Dan into their country. So sadly they had to find a new home for him... he is a permanent resident now as he stolen my heart tooo quickly. Lumpy (recently crossed the bridge) got her name when a friend of the then new owner found a small lump on her hind end...it started as a nick-name but quickly became her permanent name. Lumpy had, since birth I believe, a history of cysts and tumors, some cancer to which she succumbed September 5, 2000 having lived a life of about 5 years.
I would like to share another story of a dear sweet hedgie. So sweet indeed, that her former owners named her Sweetie. When circumstances caused them to need a new home for her I was still too new to hedgies having only gotten Thistle a week before. I spoke with friends who said they would be willing to take her in. Upon arrival to pick her up from me (I was the middle man for this arrangement) they brought her a new cage, much nicer than her former housing and gave her a new name - As the Goddess in Greek myth travels to the underworld each winter leaving the world cold and dismal and is brought into a new life of green and flowers each Spring, so Sweetie, semi-neglected and facing harsh circumstances (find new home or be euthenized!) rose to find a home of loving caring persons to give her a new life of attention and affection... She was named for that Goddess - Persephone.
My most recent addition was a donation from Dawn Wrobel. A retired breeding female and part of the albino line Dawn was thinning from her herd, Kamaria came to me as a companion to Heather. Kamaria came with her name already from Dawn, was born August 11 as was I (though a few years apart!!hehe), shares Dasher in her lineage as does Heather (they are distant cousins of a generation or two) ...being wiccan I firmly believe all things happen for a reason. Imagine my surprise when I checked a baby name book to find Kamaria is Swahili (I'd been thinking of using African names for any future hedgies) and means Moon Light!!

My hedgehog is Vincentia van Gogh, for an obvious reason--she is missing an ear.
She had been turned in to the local humane society (the children wouldn't take care of her) just days after I signed up to foster small mammals, and I couldn't bear to give her up. The former owner said the breeder told her Vinnie was born with the one ear missing and the other torn.

My first hedgie is named Casanova. He is a algerian chocolate and I rescued him at 4 months of age from a dealer. I named him Casanova because he is so friendly and has a wonderful temperment.
My second hedgehog I purchased from Shelley Tozer. She was three months old and came named. Darlington Rose is a chocolate named as part of the NASCAR hedgie theme Shelley had in her herd.
Then I received Star as a rescue at the age of four. She is a brown snowflake and is a definitely a "star!" She has a great disposition and everyone wants to see Star when they stop by.
My next two hedgehogs came from Tig. The first is a three month old grey female that I named Aschner. It kind of went along with her coloring and is a an uncommon name. Then we have Bailey and 2 month old cinnacot pinto male. He has great pinto stripings on his sides. He looks like Bailey's Irish cream so that's where he got his name from too.
My last two hedgehogs are from Kristi Solis. The first was a male already named. Sundance is two years old and apricot colored. He came with a 3 month old chocolate snowflake pinto female who I named Cassidy. I kept them as a team (Butch CASSIDY and the SUNDANCE Kid!!)

My first hedgie was Kory. I named him this because he came from Hic "kory" North Carolina. Sorry to say he passed over the bridge in 1999.
I currently have three girls. The first is Perky. I named her this because she sounds like a coffee pot "perk"ing in the morning. The other two girls came to me as rescues. One was called Priscilla. I left that name. The last was called Elvis. This was a girl so that name needed to change. Her name was soon changed to Precious because she is my "precious" baby girl.
