Baker    Families of Burke Co. NC
  ( and surrounding areas )

To go along with the page on my ggg-grandfather Joseph Baker, here is a page on a few other Baker Families residing in Burke Co. at about the time Joseph was born. A few are only minute facts about a family, wills or estates recorded in court papers with just the name of the deceased and his wife and children. A number fought in the Rev. War and service records show a little more detail about the men.  At the bottom of each article is a list of resources from which I gathered the information. Notification of mistakes or errors is greatly appreciated. E-Mail to captbakerw@netscape.net

James Baker           ( Ashe CO., Wilkes Co. NC )

Records show that James Baker entered land in the future Ashe Co. area in 1773. The deed was recorded about 1803 by an attachment which could be an indication that he died. When he wittnessed Hugh Smith's will he signed as James Baker , Esquire, which would lead one to believe that he was an older man. In the 1790 census he is shown as having a wife and four boys under 16, but these could be orphaned grandsons. James does not appear in any census after 1790, suggesting he could have died before 1800. Questions arise as to some of his children, did they belong to him or perhaps Andrew Baker Sr., living in Wilkes and Ashe at the same time as James. Some thought is given as to maybe James and Andrew being brothers. According to Eleanor Reeves, from whose book this information was obtained, his children are:

Morris Baker  m. Patsey Smith  daughter of Hugh and Jane Smith.

Robert Baker  probably lived in Grayson Co. VA

Rev. Andrew Baker  m. (1)? Susannah Vannoy (2) Elizabeth Avent

George Baker  m. Susannah Morris

Bolling Baker  m. Martha ( Patsy ) Morris

Eleanor Baker  m. Jesse Ray

Martha (Patsy) Baker  m. Justice Bowlin

Andrew Baker                   ( Wilkes Co., Ashe Co. NC )

The 1778 Wilkes County Tax List indicates some of the setlers west of the crest of the Blue Ridge. It is interesting to note that there were more familes in 1782, apparently several families left the area during the Revolutionary War years.( Some of the Tory Families left for more pro-British areas ) . The region west of the crest of the Blue Ridge, in 1778, was considered CAPTAIN ANDREW BAKER'S Company. William Colvard was the justice of the peace for the area. William Ray was a constable and Daniel Richardson, Andrew Baker Jr., and William Clay were appraisers in the southern part of Baker's District. In the Northern District of Baker's Company Micajah Pennington was the justice of the peace, Benjamin Pennington served as constable, Berverly Watkins, James Ward and Abijah Pennington were the appraisers.Included in the head of households for that part of Wilkes that became Ashe:

CAPT. ANDREW BAKER

James Baker

John Baker

Morris Baker

Robert Baker

ANDREW BAKER is thought to have moved into Ashe Co. NC in 1755. The French and Indian War forced him to leave the area, but he is supposed to have returned about 1765. A study of loose papers at the North Carolina Land Grant Office gives some added information. On April 3, 1780 ANDREW BAKER made an entry for a tract of land on the South Fork which was surveyed a week later. In these papers , reference is made to " the line of his former survey " and to his " old survey ". Since it is known that entries were being made for land just to the south ( in the McDowell Co. area) in early 1763, there is every reason to believe that ANDREW BAKER had returned tothe New River once the threat of Indians had abated.

By 1779, when Ashe developed into 2 militia districts, political power appeared to be resolving around 2 locations: one in southern Ashe in the area of Boone with ANDREW BAKER, a justice of the county court and Captain of the Militia, the political leader: and the second in the northern district centered around Penington’s Mill (located on Grassy Creek just south of the Virginia border ) with Micajah Penington , a justice and Captain of the Militia, the political leader of this area. Both Micajah Penington’s and ANDREW BAKER’S roles in power were short-lived. It is believed the Penington’s were Quakers and were not considered ardent enough Whigs. In Sept. 1799 Micajah’s estate , along with a number of friends, was onsidered confiscated, although there is no evidence it was ever sold. In a list concerning the status of several justices (prepared by Benjamin Cleveland, Colonel of the Militia, on Oct. 6th, 1781) only William Colvard was acting in his capacity as Justice of Ashe Co. George Morris had resigned; James Tompkins refused to qualify; Thomas Elledge, Abner Smalley and Micajah Penington were listed as Tories; and ANDREW BAKER was reputed to have taken protection of the enemy. It is not known how accurate Cleveland’s judgement was concerning these people. ANDREW BAKER was appointed a road overseer in June 1782, and about a decade later both Penington and BAKER were Justices and Penington was also a Captain of the Militia.

The records are plain that Andrew Baker first attempted a move into the Wilkes-Ashe area in the 1750-60s, succeeding in his attempts abt. 1765. The confusion begins when an effort is made to go back and find his roots. Is he the Andrew Baker found in the Granville Co.- Orange Co. area of North Carolina in the 1750s or is he the Andrew Baker from Prince Edward Co. VA, found there in the same time frame. Family tree charts from several of the sons attributed to him  indicate they come from Granville Co. NC and some from VA. Perhaps an uncle or nephew have become confused and then combined into one.

Andrew Baker was born ca. 1720-22 in Pennsylvania ( Lancaster Co. ) His father and grandfathers before him were gunsmiths, credited with  inventing the Baker Long Rifle. Andrew married Mary ( Molly ) Bolling  daughter of John Bolling and Elizabeth Lewis. They are credited with as many as 15 children, according to which pedigree chart you are looking at. Some of the children listed are:

William Baker

John "Renta" Baker   b.  1743/44 in VA

Richard Baker   b.  1747

Andrew Baker Jr.   b.  1749

Joseph Baker   b.  1751

George Baker   b.  1759 in Granville Co. NC

Bolling Baker   b.  1763

Joseph Baker                          ( Burke Co. NC )

Joseph Baker is found in the 1790 Burke Co. 9th District.  That district encompassed land north of the Catawba river in present day Caldwell County. He is found often in the court minutes serving as a juryman and other duties. He owned land on the SE side of Lower Creek bounded by the land of John Hays and Chruchfield Jackson. The selling of 425 acres of land to Drury Williams on May 4, 1797 perhaps signaled a move from the county where he had been a resident since abt. 1778. This Joseph Baker could likely be the Joseph Baker living in Knox Co. Ky in the 1820-30s. This Joseph might also be the son of Andrew Baker and Mary Bolling. The summons of a William Baker from Wilkes Co. to testify on behalf of this Joseph and the appearance of Bolling Baker in other court records could indicate a possible connection.

Joseph's children are:

1  Brice Baker  b. abt 1775  m. Mary Arthur on Jan. 26, 1804 Knox Co. KY

2  William Baker  b. est. 1765-75  m. Elizabeth Dean on Oct. 6, 1803. Children of     William and Elizabeth are:

  2a  John Daniel Baker  b. abt.  1805  m. Sept. 22, 1825 to Mary " Polly " Cain

Children of John Daniel Baker and Mary Cain are:

2a1 William Richard Baker  b. ca. 1830  m. Francis Jane Mills

2a2  John William Baker  b. est. 1828-38  m. Marriah Lettitian Hurst

  2a3  Daniel C. (Cain ) Baker  b.  abt. 1825

  2a4  Susan Baker  b.  est. 1833

  2a5  Elizabeth Baker  b.  1842

  2a6  Margaret Baker  b.  ca 1846

  2a7  Alexander Baker  b.  ca 1854

  2a8  Robert Baker  b.  ca 1856

  2b  William Baker Jr.  b. est. 1804-5 m. April 8, 1823 to Elizabeth Wacker

3  Sarah or Sally Baker  b.  est.  1775-85  m. May 10, 1807 James Stewart

John Baker  b. abt. 1793  m.  Nancy Tredway  and another Tredway

5  Jane Baker  b.  abt.  1792  m. Nov. 26, 1812  Thomas Stewart

6  Another researcher lists Susan Baker  b.  1775-85 who never married
