Francis Clanton enlisted in Iredell County in Company
B on November 1, 1863. He was captured during the battle of Spotsylvania
Court House (May 12, 1864), and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland.
On August 19, 1864, he was transferred to Elmira, New York, where he died
of chronic diarrhea on May 24, 1865. Private Clanton is buried in
the Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, New York.
