John Costner was born in Gaston County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting on October 6, 1861, at the age of 21. He enlisted in Company H. On November 25, 1862, he died of typhoid fever, in a hospital in Mount Jackson, Virginia. Private Costner is buried in the Old Soldier's Cemetery in mount Jackson.
