Cornelius J. Coffey resided in Watauga County and enlisted
in Company E on September 18, 1861, at the age of 21. He was wounded
during the battle of 2nd Manassas (August 29, 1862), and returned to duty
in January - February, 1863. He was "accidentally shot" in the right
foot on July 16 - 17, 1863, and was reported absent wounded until November
17, 1864, when he was retired to the Invalid Corps by reason of disability
from his wounds. Private Coffey is buried in the White Springs Cemetery
in Watauga County, North Carolina.
