Andrew J. L. Black was born in Mecklenburg County and resided there as a farmer prior to enlisting there at the age of 21 on September 16, 1861. He enlisted in Company C. He was wounded in the thigh on August 29, 1862, during the battle of 2nd Mannassas. His wounds would prove fatal, and he died on October 22, 1862. Private Black is buried in the Sharon Cemetery, Middlesburg, Virginia.
