Robert N. Bivens was born in Union County and resided there as a farmer until enlisting at the age of 30 in Company D on September 16, 1861.  He was wounded in the face and/or right leg at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 3, 1863.  He returned to duty in September-October, 1863; was reported absent without leave in September-October, 1864; and was reported on detached service from November 1864 till February 1865.  He surrendered with the regiment on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House.  Private Bivens is buried in the Williams Cemetery in Union County, North Carolina.
