Smith F. Barnes was born in Alexander or Wilkes County and resided as a farmer in Alexander County prior to enlisting.  He enlisted in Alexander County in Company G on October 9, 1861, at the age of 30.  He was promoted to Corporal in March-June of 1863.  Wounded and captured at the battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, he was hospitalized at Gettysburg where he died of his wounds on or about July 20, 1863.  Corporal Barnes was re-interred to the Soldiers' Section of Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.
