Tobias Bumgarner was born in Alexander County and enlisted there in Company G at the age of 28 on April 15, 1862. He died at Lynchburg, Virginia, on July 24 or August 3, 1862, of typhoid fever. Private Bumgarner is buried in the Confederate Section of the Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg.
