J. W. Bowman resided in Alexander County and enlisted in Iredell County in Company F on August 8, 1862. He was 26 years old at the time. He died of chronic diarrhea and/or pneumonia at a hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia, on June 12, 1863. Private Bowman is buried in the University of Virginia's Confederate Cemetery in Charlottesville.
