William H. Ballard resided in Gaston County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Company I in Iredell County on August 15, 1862, at the age of 22. He died in a hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia, on or about March 26, 1863, of chronic diarrhea. Private Ballard is buried in the Confederate Section of the Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg, Virginia.
