Jackson L. Bost was born in Cabarrus
County and resided in Union County prior to enlisting in Company D at the
age of 28 on September 16, 1861. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant
at the time of his enlistment. At the battle of Hanover Court House (May
27, 1862), he was captured and taken to Fort Columbus, New York. On June
21, 1861, he was transferred to Johnson's Island, Ohio. Bost was promoted
to captain of Company I on July 1, 1862, while still in prison. He was
transferred to Vicksburg, Mississippi, on September 1, 1862, and declared
exchanged at Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia, on November 8, 1862.
Captain Bost returned to duty prior to January 1, 1863. He was wounded
during the battle of Chancellorsville (May 1-4, 1863) and again at the
battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863). He was promoted to major on July
24, 1863, and transferred to the Field and Staff. He was present until
surrendering at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9, 1865. At
the time of surrender, he was in command of the regiment. Major Bost is
buried in the Olive Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Union County, North
Carolina.
