Picture of Tombstone Forthcoming…

John L. Austin was in Union County and resided there prior to enlisting in Company D on September 16, 1861, at the age of 22. He was mustered in as a Sergeant and reduced to ranks in March-April, 1862. A wound received at the battle of Frayser's Farm in the right leg would keep him incapacitated until March of 1863. He was nominated for the Badge of Distinction for gallantry at Chancellorsville. He was captured at Gettysburg and confined first at Fort Delaware, Delaware, and later transferred to Point Lookout, where he died of typhoid fever on November 19, 1863. Private Austin is buried in the Confederate Cemetery at Point Lookout.
