YANCEY, GOODLOE HARPER, business man, was born July 9, 1848, in Montgomery, son of William Lowndes and Sarah Caroline (Earle) Yancey, (q. v.). He was educated in the private schools of Montgomery and Coosa Counties; attended the University of Alabama, 1861-62; University of Georgia, 1863 and 1865-66; and took a course at Eastman's business college, Poughkeepsie, N. Y., 1866-67. During the War of Secession he served as a private in Morgan's Kentucky cavalry, C. S. Army, and was wounded several times. He worked for a short while as a bookkeeper in Montgomery; was cashier of the "Atlanta Intelligiencer," Atlanta, Ga., 1867-68; cashier, Princeton manufacturing company, Athens, Ga., 1868-72, and alderman, Athens, Ga., 1884-96. At one time he was the owner of several Georgia newspapers. He next engaged in planting and finally, 1899, became secretary of the prison commission of Georgia. From 1886 to 1896 he held the office, of lieutenant, captain, lieutenant-colonel and colonel of the 3rd Georgia volunteer infantry regiment. He is a Democrat; Baptist; and a Knight of Pythias. Married: (1) in September, 1872, at Athens, Ga., to Lucy Grattan, daughter of Lewis J. and Martha (Adams) Dupree, the former a banker and planter, of Lexington, Ga.; (2) in June, 1899, to Ruby W., daughter of Albert Mandeville, of Athens, Ga., a northerner by birth but who served during the War of Secession in the Army of Northern Virginia.
