About The Harvey Genealogist

The Harvey Surname is the 225th most common surname in the United States*. Through our website we have begun to work our way back to our Harvey Ancestors who were among the first to emigrate to what is now the United States from England. The history of the Virginia Plantation Colonies, the creation of great cities like Boston and the pioneering of the American West - all involved Harveys from the beginning. There were Harveys that rode with some of the notorious Train Robbers of the West, and others that were leaders in many scientific and medical fields.

The history of the Harvey name in England is well documented, and we are all becoming very familiar with the stories of Henry VIII and his trusted bowman, Turner "longbow" Harvey, the renowned Dr. William Harvey of Essex, those Harveys of Bristol, etc. There are many Scots and Scots/Irish Harvey lines out there, but it has proven a bit more difficult to trace these, as many of these Harvey ancestors were quite a bit more work-a-day kinds of people who came to the States and worked as coalminers, carpenters, stonecutters and labourers of all sorts.

Many of you are descendants of these lines, and here you are, reading The Harvey Genealogist, and that has been the goal of this publication; to unite all the researchers (and their research) in one common place.

We have committed to participate in a project of immeasurable magnitude - to create "teams" of researchers working on common lines, discussing them on the Harvey Discussion List and then presenting the information for archival in The Harvey Genealogist. I hope you will join us in this project, in this COMMITMENT, to further Harvey Genealogy.

I'm proud of my Harvey ancestry. We have the inquisitive, courageous soul of the pioneer, as well as the strength, creativity and intelligence to make the most of that pioneering spirit. Today, you and I are pioneers, too - pioneering this new electronic medium which could reunite Harveys around the globe. Won't you hitch up your cyber- wagon, and join the train?

About the Editor

I began researching my Harvey Ancestors in 1975. The information I collected formed the basis of the first Harvey Genealogist Newsletters. In 1994 I created The Harvey Genealogist Website (then hosted by Prodigy) and in 1996 moved the site to Geocities, where it has remained for nearly 9 years. I am now an IM & T (Microsoft) Lecturer in West Yorkshire, England.
