Hank

Hank departed for the Rainbow Bridge on Saturday, May 22, 1999. The sparkle had left his eyes and he turned down an hot dog and his spray cheese with his rimadyl. His breathing had gotten a bit labored, indicating that the cancer had spread to his lungs. He just wanted to lay in his crate and sleep. At times, it seemed it took too much energy to open his eyes. I had thought to wait till Monday but I couldn't put him through the waiting. And when he ignored the dogs at the on-call vet, well, this vet was very nice and understanding, staying with us for a bit. Hank's vet was out of town for the weekend. My mom went with me and Hank. My wish came true - he made it to our birthdays last Wednesday. This is so hard; I've never been away from him more than 10 or 12 hours. He was doing so well yesterday but today his whole demeanor had changed. And I knew.

Hank was a 5 yr old when I brought him home in June 1996. We had a couple minor adjustment problems the first couple days but he turned out to be the sweetest, most loving dog I had ever met. He would leave food for a tummy rub. He never bit anyone while he owned me, but he sure bathed a lot of people :) His Gotcha Day was June 15; it would have been three years that we'd been together. He loved people, especially kids, whether it was because they were on face wash level or another reason. He certainly changed the perception of Rotties in this town, even convincing those scared of Rotties to pet him and letting him lean on them. He will be sorely missed by alot of people around here. He was a very popular member of our pet therapy group, especially by the people at the short term behavioral facility and the physical rehab facility. Those tough teens would melt when he plopped in their laps and washed their chins, rolling over for a back scratch and tummy rubs.

Hank is now romping at the Bridge with Prince and all the others gone before. Go with God, Hank. Mommy sorely misses you. The champion of my heart.
