What is tourism? Tourism is defined as travel for leisure or educational purposes, with at least one night spent away from home. Tourism can be either within one’s own country (domestic tourism) or to another (international tourism).

 

Tourists travel for many different reasons. They may just want to rest or have an enjoyable time away from the routine of home. Or they may want to visit historical sites, museums and art galleries. Other may travel to attend sporting events, to see how other people live or to have a change of weather or climate.

 

The growth of international tourism. When people have more money to spend and more leisure time, they become more interested in tourism. In the 1950s air travel became relatively cheap and so travel to other countries became possible for many more people. Since then world travel has increased rapidly.
