2003; ---8 races

16th February Matilda Bay run (WAMC) 10km;45min 53. (71st of 158) ...

23rd March Joondalup festival fun run (WAMC) 10km;44min 58. (39th of 143) ..........5K splits; 21.09/23.49.....

6th April BRIDGES Telethon fun run (WAMC) 10km;42min 40. (150th of 1259) ......5K splits; 20.26/22.14.....

The 42.40 on 6th April 2003 is the 4th best 10k Ive run so far after my 1998 Bridges & Joondalup runs, and my 1997 Joondalup run. Although both my knees presumably still need operations, my crosstraining mix is working well, mainly just need to do reps sessions more often! Should be able to crack the P.B. ('98 Bridges 41.01) sometime soon this year if everything keeps progressing even as slowly as it is, although now my focus is switching to hopefully doing some longer races this year (half marathon and marathon), although there is no reason why I cant keep improving my 10k time as well. Try and smash! the P.B. and get an A-grade run (sub 38min) on the board? Probably need to get some advice from my old racewalking coach re preparing for the marathon.
27th April "Lest we forget" fun run in Kings Park(Full results) 8km;35min 56. (48th of 191)
Busy with other stuff like adjusting to my new job etc...not sure if I can get enough distance done in time for the Marathon this year, plus the flu and not much training = deterioation of my speed, going to take awhile to get back maybe??? ...might just have to wait on the marathon til another year, not sure my body is going to be ready this time, trainingwise or injurieswise, see how things go in the next few weeks.

8th June Fremantle Half Marathon (WAMC) 21.1km; 1hr 43min 24 (166th of 289.)

Very happy! to get under the 5min per km pace average considering where I am at training and fitnesswise just now.
Nice course, good views of the ocean and also I like the out and back setup. Reminds me of when I racewalked the Aust 50km in 98, 99. Great day!
My back played up on the undulations a bit,
Some knee soreness a few hours later, but not too bad...
Nice to get the feel of a genuine longish race again, first time over 1hr for about 3 years, (the sydney Olympic 20k walk trial). Longest race I have **RUN***, big sense of satisfaction to successfully nail this one, even though the time is nothing incredible compared to what others are doing, for me here and now, I'm very happy with it. Maybe restart things a bit in the weeks ahead??? for some shorter races...

31st August Perth City to Surf 12km 54min 15...(907th of about 14,584 )

(about 20,000 entrants altogether this year, just failed to smash my P.B., but still a good solid run I was happy with... more reps, and hill-work needed to beat P.B., was within striking distance (well under 4.30 per km) until near the 3rd big hill, on Oceanic Drive, where I blew out to about 5min per km for the 9-11km section....didnt cope that well with 2nd hill either so hills work and more reps needed....
next time...maybe smash the P.B. and nail an A-grade time......very nice conditions, slight tailwind all the way to the beach.) Training has been better the last month or so, but still can improve lots, next challenge is the Perth Half-Marathon, hopefully the winds on the river will not be too strong, and I can improve on what I did 8th June a lot.....Saw a lot of WAPSF, and Freo tops in the City 2 Surf...way to go!!!

Jon at the Start .......& Finish of the 2003 City to Surf 12km;

14th September Perth Half Marathon (WAMC) 21.1km; 1hr 46min 40 ( 243rd of 400.)

Disappointing to not smash the PB on a flat fast course like this one. Wind was not a factor. Heat probably was a factor towards the end, maybe the race should be started at 0730hrs or even 0700hrs. Was still a chance to beat PB with 3km to go, but it ended up being "a grind" just to finish the thing, after I "worked myself out of it", by (a) starting too fast (5k-21.05, 10k-44.54 first 10.5k-47.12, last 10.6k-59.28),
(b) got my drinks plan badly wrong (combined with heat = dehydration/disorientation/minor cramping etc) Training probably wasnt up to scratch for the time I tried to target. Still a decent run, and nice to notch up my second "half mara". Some nice encouragement from other runners. Good mental practice, and hopefully I will not repeat my mistakes next time. Same as Freo Half, it was a great experience just being able to compete, and enjoy the sights of the Swan River...Time to rest the knees a bit, and move down to the shorter/sharper stuff for the summer aths season. (See Runtrack 2003/2004.)

5th October Fremantle Fun run (WAMC) 5km; 21min 04 (40th of 169.) Wanted to go faster, but not possible this time, had fun.......

Start of 2003 PerthCity to Surf 12km.

2004; ---8 races

21st March Joondalup Fun Run (WAMC) 5km;23min 08. (37th of 158)
(Struggled due to; 1. sick for a week before, and still sick on the day. 2. calf problems 3-4km 3. Hot conditions.) ...
4th April Bridges Fun Run (WAMC) 10km;48min 50. ( 337th of 1187 )
Bit of a disaster really, due to terrible preparation/training. Splits; 23.37/25.13.
Negatives;
1. I have had to managed my anterior tibia (front of calf) problem, which meant that I hadnt done enough distance work to handle the 10km distance properly, the last 5k was definetly done on "guts" (UTG) rather than training.
2. I have been sick in recent weeks/my RHR's fitness has been bad this week.
Positives;
1.The 1k reps session I did in the week combined with my track racing this year, meant that my speed was excellent,(moving very well) and I was able to throw in a 4.06 split for my last 1km, by pushing hard through the last 500m or so.
2. I completed my 8th consecutive Bridges run, and was able to control my calf problem enough so it didnt slow me up during the run at all.

Its time I got some of my injuries sorted out, probably can't manage 'em the way they are much longer I dont think........
2nd May "Lest we forget" fun run in Kings Park(Full results) 8km;37min 40 (of )

...interesting course with some tough hills this time, although lacking the views of the swan river, in some ways a very appropriate course for this event in my opinion, and very spectator friendly, plus great to see a 4km option available..... My knees generally hate downhill! on bitumen, although the downhill finish on the grass was nice....Tibia a little sore during and after, but I think the rest days, and voltaren did the trick this time...intend getting to the doc/physio this week!!! Still a bit on the slow side, but really enjoyed the race...Saw some people who like me, enjoyed the derby win by Freo the previous night. Excellent event thanks to Raf, John Gilmour, and all the officials, one worth supporting for what it is all about!!! Lest we forget.

visited a sports doc on 5/5, looks like its an; orthotics, copious amounts of ice, voltaren, and strategically placed rest days regime from here onwards....Perth Marathon on 11th July, hopefully (a) get to the start line, (b)be well prepared.

13th June Fremantle Half Marathon (WAMC) 21.1km; 1hr 47min 02 (215th of 397.)

29th August City to Surf 12km; 56min 22secs (1133rd place of 10917 12km runners that chose to be timed.)

2003/2004 photos pagehere...
Didnt prepare very well. Partly not very motivated. The big 3 hills as usual were felt, a lot! of runners, not much space to run in.
I think I negative splitted, and came home well (last (downhill!) 1km was 3.49), tried to run about 4-4.20 from 8k onwards, and my 1k-2k split was 4.01,
but lacked the fitness and motivation to run those sort of splits all the way just enjoyed the race, chatted with various people I recognised out there.
Maybe next year I can shoot for a PB and maybe even an A-grade run would be a great goal..., but to go under 4min per km the whole way,
would require sustained!,consistent,focused, training (and improved lifestyle)...doesnt seem that likely just now...
The 18k on the Wednesday beforehand, my daily cycling and the 2 reps sessions in the last couple of weeks beforehand, ensured I ran a B-grade time,
and actually found it a pretty easy run apart from the 3 hills...Its all good fun! A good quality run! One of my best results for 2004!

24th October Rottnest Marathon (WAMC) 42.2km; 4hrs 32min 01 (112th of 125)

See my Rottnest Marathon 2004 page for race comments, and photos like the ones below~~~~~~~~
.......

14th November"Dolphin Dash" Mandurah 10km; 51min 56..........
Slowest 10k race I have ever run, not very fit, plus heat!, and other things(no km markers meant my pace judgement was poor, and I did not know how far I had to go to the finish, and almost got lost took wrong turns a few times, confusingly marked course at times...)...Glad I went though a lot of fun to have another race, and went out hard! early, plus enjoyed the views of Blue Bay, Doddis Beach, canals, and the Mandurah foreshore, which brought back memories from over 10 years ago...well worth the trip!, also very good to spend some time with friends there who ran it also!

2005;---9 races

and the beautiful bush that was traversed in the 6-INCH,
which climbs to the top of the Darling Scarp
on the way from North Dandalup to Dwellingup...more photos to come.

31st December New Years Eve 4km 40min 16 with KL, Ran with her and she wasn't feeling well so almost a DNF, but she managed to get going again and walk/jog to the end...Was starting to get the flu myself actually, but still could have done at least half that time if I had run on my own, but I was more interested in enjoying the last day of 2005 running along the Swan with the sunset behind us, and KL by my side...Nice!.......
