NYE slow jog n Walk
Saturday 31/12/05; 4km slow jog/run for 40minutes with KL at the WAMC New Years Eve run....She was not feeling well so probably not a good time to attempt a race, but still nice to see the race unfolding, and walking/jogging back along the Swan River as the sunset behind us was a nice experience, hopefully come back and run it properly in 2006. I saw one person with darkish hair wearing a Cool Running top warming down afterwards, and I think I may have seen someone with a CR hat also but not sure on that... Hoping that in 2006 I can have a better year and do lots of big P.B.'s posted by trailblazer777 | 1/01/2006 11:31:00 AM | 0 comments links to this post

Saturday, December 31, 2005 An easy 5km
Saturday 31/12/05; Ran an easy 5km @ ArenA Joondalup in 28min 41 HR-159... been a bit sick and tired the last few days, so very nice to get to the ArenA and have a relaxed run...Just took it easy at just under 6 minutes per km...Did the hilly 2km loop to start with but got swooped by magpies so decided to do 3000m on the 400m track there to finish, rather than do battle with the magpies again...dont know what Eddie everywhere was doing in WA... ;-) just kiddin...*LOL* Hope to get to the WAMC NYE run tonight at Burswood with KL as well, be very! nice to finish 2005 with a run along the Swan... posted by trailblazer777 | 12/31/2005 09:46:00 AM | 1 comments links to this post

Wednesday, December 28, 2005 A quick! 2km at the Emerald
Wednesday 28/12/05; Ran 2km in 8.01 at Emerald Park. HR 165 Splits; 4.07/3.54...Attacked this one a fair bit...trying to get a good sweat going...it worked...mission accomplished...very short run, but meant something to me to get this one done...as usual had to traverse my way through the local dog-walkers with the dogs illegally! off the lead of course...anyway as Scaterd Few once said; "enough noise...now lets get serious about this..." Tried out the new socks my Brother sent over from USA as well...they arrived today... posted by trailblazer777 | 12/28/2005 04:27:27 PM | 0 comments links to this post

Tuesday, December 27, 2005 A ride and...a puncture :-(
Tuesday 17th December 2005; Cycled 17km 62 MINUTES. Walked the last 1.5km home with a puncture to front tyre...Was planning on a much longer ride...but not to be...at least I was close to home when this downer hit...Have to regroup... posted by trailblazer777 | 12/27/2005 03:01:00 PM | 0 comments links to this post

Monday, December 26, 2005 A quick 11km ride...
Monday 26th December 2005; Cycled 11km in 27minutes 48 (HR-144 at end) on the mountainbike on my Edgewater to Whitfords "freeway" course...Used the black repco bike again...Reasonably solid ride. Rather short, but thats all I had time for... Saw a tandem bike, and had a little bit of a stoush with a bloke on a racer on the way back, was making ground on him on the uphill after he flew past me on the flat...but eventually I let him go, wasn't feeling like hammering myself into the ground all the way back, but it was fun...Nice to get something on the board for the first day of this week. My goal is to do about 6-7 hours (360min-420min) at least for this week, and then try once again to put the pedal to the metal in the new year, as ideally I'd like to be putting some 600minute (10hours)+ weeks on the board in 2006, instead of the slack 7hrs a week stuff Ive been averaging in 2005...although its been good to have a slightly easier year volumewise after my big jump in 2004. Went from 269hrs? in 2003 to 416hrs in 2004 and its looking like about 365hrs for 2005...(Total training and racing etc time for year) Onward! Pretty keen to do New Years Eve 7.5km on this Saturday night 1830 at Burswood WA Marathon Club clubrooms...KL should have a run also? Christmas Run
Sunday 25th December 2005; Ran 2km in 9.33. Night run at Emerald Park, would have gone further but did not like the look of the teenagers in cars congregating near my car...Busy most of the last 2 days going to various Christmas gatherings for my family and KL's family...been meaning to get out for a long ride, but the opportunities just keep slipping away...Lack of sleep too...Less than 6 hrs a night average for 2 weeks in a row...Had a look at some airline prices for my planned trips to Melbourne (Commonwealth Games...I have tix for two of the Athletics sessions) and maybe Sydney (6 foot track) in March...Found some Virgin ones for $298 return to Sydney...Looks like I have enough frequent flyer points from my USA trip in 2001 to get to Melbourne for the Commonwealth Games , but for that only....Its going to be very tricky financially but I am not throwing in the towel just yet....

Thursday, December 22, 2005 First run after 6-Inch
Thursday 22/12/05; Ran 14km at Kingsway in 96minutes...Heart Rate 159 at end. Splits 23.00/23.49/23.56/25.00 Just under 7 minutes a km, relaxed but not too slow...Did 4 laps of my 3.5km course around this large group of ovals, and about 95% of the run was on soft grass which is good....Did this one on the way home from work...Have got to find my vaseline!!! chafing! argh...plus the pectoral area was starting to get a little bloodied so I jettisoned the shirt for the last 7km to stop the rubbing.....Pretty happy with the run...Both knees rather proppy today but ok for the run. Was a little careful with them though and the right one was giving me trouble on the stairs at work today...Onward! 6 foot dreams A crazy!!! notion...
An email from one of the people who ran 6-inch last weekend has triggered again a very!!! crazy idea which kinda sneaked into the back of my mind in the last few weeks which is; Why dont I run the 6-foot track marathon on 11th March 2006!....There I've said it....that wasn't too bad....was it???....I have to admit I did sign up for 6-foot track newsletter a few weeks back...but with it being so close to my planned trip to Melbourne, and my limited finances, I didn't think it possible...Plus I would only go if KL is happy to come also....anyway I will have a think about it in next few weeks and maybe I will do it??? http://www.coolrunning.com.au/sixfoot/ Biggest issue would be the finances... posted by trailblazer777 | 12/22/2005 01:15:50 AM | 1 comments links to this post

Monday, December 19, 2005 Off the beaten track: 6-inch track 2005 Conquered!
Sunday 18/12/05 Ran 45km six inch track Marathon. Finished in 6 hours 25 minutes.... Although I failed to go under target of 6 hours, pretty satisfied with a rewarding, memorable and challenging!!! run... :-) Successfully finished my first ever ULTRA run, the toughest run I have ever attempted. Conquered the 6-inch track! WUHOO!!!!!!! (Link to the results from this inaugural 45km challenge can be found @ http://wamc.proboards41.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1127100618&page=7) This race began with the surreal sight of our own moon-shadows as we ran up goldmine hill at the beginning of 6-inch 2005.... Jon's thoughts on personal Challenges and Positives from the 2005 6-inch track marathon; Challenges;Turned out to be tougher than I expected, some of the main challenges I encountered; 1. -my right arm cramped up/got very sore about 18km-19km mark just after Del Park Rd...So only had the left arm to help drive me up the hills from there onwards... 2. -The hills between Del Park Rd and Oakley Dam really put me through the wringer....Ended up walking a lot of the final 15km. 3. -my last hour I was battling mild dehydration, I had run out of water and powerade, and I had "spent all me pennys" in the legs..... 4. -the heat/sun just before Marrinup where the big powerlines are, was significant...but mostly there was plenty of shade so any heatstroke was minor...(it was 32-35 degrees by 1154am according to TV news later that day, and I finished at about 1040ish...)... 5- made a minor navigation error near Whittakers that took me a little off course, but soon rejoined the MundaBiddi...can't believe I missed a turn somewhere especially as I had run that section with Dave on Recon Run #2 a few weeks earlier...[but not as big an error as some others, who decamped on the Munda Biddi in a Northerly direction instead of a Southerly direction?? which handed the lead to Dave...]...When Dave came out on the mountainbike looking for me I was still a chance to go sub 6 hours (my easy goal time for the race--{my hard goal time if I had trained better was sub 5hrs, although I perhaps would revise that to sub 5hrs30 in hindsight}) at Marrinup if I could have put together sub 6min K's for the rest of the way...but after digging deep for about 13minutes or so...threw in the towel and walked the last 45 minutes or so to the finish... the last 30minutes or so was with my Fiancee who came out to walk to the finish with me...legs just didnt have any juice... Some positives; 1.- I finished the toughest run/race I have ever attempted and did not let the 6-inch beat me... 2-my new DMH-Hydra hydration pack was comfortable to run with, and pretty much did the job, although I should have stocked up with more fluids at the halfway mark, but thats my error of judgement. So very happy with that. 3.-got to see some very beautiful and varying scenery, including the view looking back from top of Goldmine hill, the conveyer belt, views near Marrinup... 4.-revisited some of the trails and SCARP RD near Whittakers AND OAKLEY DAM where I did hiking camp 1987-1990...some of the hills remind me of Cardiac Arrest hill which was on Day 2 of hiking camp between Jarrahdale and "The Swamp"... See Hiking camp link here; http://www.oocities.org/Colosseum/7549/hikingcamp88.html 5.-was a very special time with my Fiancee who I really appreciated being there for me... 6-had some good chats with Suzy and Kate near Whittakers..., and enjoyed running at an easy pace for a lot of the first 17km to Del Park Rd; 2hrs 17min... 7-enjoyed the solitude and time alone away from the city, especially from Del Park Rd onwards, and enjoyed cranking up the pace running sub 6minutes per km for 4km (Del Park Rd-17km to Drinks stop on Scarp Rd with Gary 21km), and also for a short while before that when I tried to catch up to Cota,Warren and Andrew not long after Whittakers...(had them in sight, but couldn't quite get onto the train...) when they returned from their detour towards Dandalup Dam... 8-The whole experience was rather surreal at times for me in a nice way, and despite coming into the run on less than 2 hours sleep, my 2005 6-inch experience was enormously rewarding, and I am very happy and satisfied to have finished the course... Here is link to my post about how I located my DMH Hydra @Compleat Fishing & Camping World Shop 13, 200 Winton Rd, Joondalup WA Ph. 1800068788 http://www.coolrunning.com.au/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=9;t=000213#000020 2P's post sent on 16th March earlier this year set me on the right track it is here; http://www.coolrunning.com.au/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=9;t=000213#000011 Some more of Jon's thoughts and experiences out on the trail; While out on the trail, I had a few songs going in my head which I used to inspire me, especially in the final 24km-28km after Del Park Rd.... mostly leftovers from my Fiancee's memorable!!! 30th Birthday "Jane Brook Idol" the night before...including Shannon Noll's LIFT, Lee Hardings version of EYE OF THE TIGER!, and a vivid visual and audio mental image of Steve doing an EMINEM song...dont know the name of the Eminem song or the lyrics really, but the tune stuck in my head....Tuesday update; KL says its called "sing for the moment".... I had about 2hrs sleep before this run as I was busy trying to sing along to Shannon Noll's CMON AUSSIE CMON (in my AUST one-day cricket shirt) and Lee Hardings Eye of Tiger as part of KL's 30th celebrations the night before...was really cool fun, they had a lights,bubbles machine, the cds in the background and a good mike...Enjoyed the performances and the chance to sing myself a lot, another special! night. After 2300 KL and I drove off into the night by the light of the full moon for the 4am start of my 45km run........what a night/morning!/weekend...This explains why KL did all the driving cos I needed to rest slightly more...owe her heaps on that... One of the other things I used a lot after the 21km mark to stay motivated was to have my MundaBiddi photocopied map out just checking my progress on the route to the finish...trying to calculate if I was still a chance to go under 6 hours.... Extremely happy with the debut performance of my DMH Hydra hydration backpack.... Monday update; I am extremely sore in quads,calves, arms,shoulders, back,and generally just tired, and trying to restock on fluids, but hope I will have the chance to improve my 6-inch time in the future maybe.... Injury report; Minor blister on right big toe, and left knee a little sore, but overall no major injury worries that I am aware of at this stage...I had a few major slips on gravel...(or as KL likes to say "I went for a few trips")but managed to arrest my slide on every occasion without injurying the knees..or ankles...My shoes look a lot! older now...gotta go drink more powerade and ice the left knee... Tuesday update; Many Thanks to the CoolRunners who have commented on my blog means a lot to me to get a few comments on the blog in the last few weeks...oh yeah and if you haven't guessed it my Fiancee, she is a huge Lee Harding fan....and an even bigger Shannon NOLL fan, but we also enjoy another Australian artist in Nathan Tasker see http://www.nathantasker.com/whose visit to Perth earlier this year we both really enjoyed. posted by trailblazer777 | 12/19/2005 01:34:00 AM | 3 comments links to this post

Tuesday 13/12/05 Ran 4x500m reps 1.42/1.46/1.47/1.50 @ ArenA. HR's 159/168/180/192. A bit hard to be sure on heart rates cos my watch light doesnt stay on for 10 seconds. Didnt start til after 2000hrs (8pm)...Pretty happy with that...Just felt like doing a speed session tonight, enjoyed the higher intensity attacking, although I wasn't enjoying struggling to breathe but its all part of the reps experience to paraphrase some pollie...Grass track, and left knee seeemed ok with it...iced afterwards anyway cos it is still a little proppy....Pretty happy with this session even though its not a P.B... Too tired and short on time to do much more. Have only slept 3.5 hours for each of the last 2 nights. Recovery run (and left knee sorenesss again...)
Monday 12/12/05 Ran 5.5km in just a tick under 35minutes. A night run again. Started at about 2100hrs(9pm). A recovery ride after cycling more than 60km yesterday. God held the rain off as well which was a nice and pleasant blessing...Enjoyed the run, and I think it probably was also good in that it helped alleviate a minor headache to some degree which I had battled with through much of the day... Injury report; my left knee flared up sore again probably a bit worse than last Tuesday 6/12/05 after my 11km run there. Again I am icing it (actually have a cold pack on my knee as I type now....) mainly as a precautionary measure...but the last thing I need is my knee blowing up on me or making six-inch painful on Sunday....I'm quietly confident that it will be ok for Sunday, God willing...however I'd say that I about a 90/10 chance of starting at six inch now...I.e. there is a 90% chance I will run 6-inch, whereas before this knee flare-up there was a 100% chance of me doing it...No, should be right but will be watching it closely...Its been 5 years since I tore the ACL and if it gets really bad on me I will stop...would prefer the torn ligament does not become a ruptured ligament....... Anyhow enough doom and gloom, to paraphrase scaterd few; "now lets get serious about this"...A successful six-inch campaign that is....A good recovery run...did the job very nicely... posted by trailblazer777 | 12/13/2005 12:56:41 AM | 1 comments links to this post

Sunday, December 11, 2005 A tough 3hr+ ride!
Sunday 11/12/05 Cycled approx. 58.75km for 3hrs 40minutes on the black repco mountainbike. HR only 138 at end, but it was extremely tough pushing into some very gusty headwinds most of the way. Legs felt like lead by the end. My ride started in Edgewater and I arrived at Burswood Casino 1 hr and 34 minutes later (just over 31km), where I caught up with a mate of mine James, who I havent been able to catch up with for many months... Then we did 19km into some of the worst winds, began by riding to East Perth, and then along the river all the way to Narrows Bridge (the winds on Riverside Drive &the Narrows were diabolical to ride into), along South Perth foreshore all the way back to Burswood. He headed for home on the train, and I gutsed it out for another 8.5km, taking 30 minutes or so to crawl (to China? no sorry thats my Tourniquet obsession rearing its head... *LOL* :-))the Leederville train station, where I finally called it a day, and caught the train to Edgewater. Then for my 3rd session of the day a quick 7 minute ride back home battling those infernal winds for one last time. Used 1.8 litres of Gatorade, and 2x50g Carboshotz in total on my rides. Got stuck into some salted peanuts after that to replace some of the salt I had sweated out, but mainly cos I like ém.... posted by trailblazer777 | 12/11/2005 06:27:00 PM | 0 comments links to this post
Caribee drink holder experiment I
Sunday 11/12/05 Ran 2km 9min.20 HR -156. at Emerald park (2 laps). Test run for how it felt with the Caribee Drink Holders. Put two Gatorade bottles in ém, and they stayed in ok, but the bottle bounce, and moving around is a little annoying. This option works but I still think a Camelbak or some other way of using Fuel Belt has to be a better option. I dont want to use the Fuel Belt bottles because they have red plastic residue inside them, and I don't want to drink plastic... My thoughts at the moment are 1. invest in a Camelbak, 2. try some 250-300ml bottles in the fuel belt 3. dont carry drinks around my waist, but use the 20km drink stop or my trusty helper KL to refuel, or 4. go with the annoying caribee drink holders which are great for cycling or hiking but a little bouncy/annoying for running.... posted by trailblazer777 | 12/11/2005 10:53:10 AM | 0 comments links to this post
Fuel Belt experiment I aborted
Saturday 10/12/05 Ran/walked for about 10min. Tried Fuel belt with powerade bottles in it at about 2350hrs, but the powerade bottle worked its way loose and fell out, so had to abort session early and will have to try something else. I think maybe if I attach my caribee drink holders with gatorade bottles maybe that will work.. Might try that tomorrow.... posted by trailblazer777 | 12/11/2005 12:33:00 AM | 0 comments links to this post
Saturday, December 10, 2005 Keeping the stomach strong II
Saturday 10/12/05; Did 400 Ab crunches which is double what I did 3 days ago, so a bit more of an UTGuts! (literally *LOL*) effort this time...My fiancee though, she is still very much my hero when it comes to these with what she has been doing in recent weeks. (She does 5x150 for a total of 750 per session, which targets different abdominal muscle groups according to her). I just do the same ones for the whole session at the moment. The 400 is my best effort ever since I first started doing these occasionally in 2002. They are good cos the stronger I am there, the more I can offset the strain on my back caused by stress fractures in 5th Lumbar vertabrae, which flares up for me every now an then. Since I kicked things off with 100 on 17th October 2005, I have done the ab crunches 11 times now I think, and my Fiancee KL doing them many times a week has been a good spur to get me doin'ém and keep doin' ém.... posted by trailblazer777 | 12/10/2005 05:27:12 PM | 0 comments links to this post

Bluff Knoll IV: a very!!!!!!! special walk.

Saturday 3/12/05 Climbed/bushwalked up the 1073m Bluff Knoll in the Stirling Ranges with KL. Took us 81 minutes 31 to make it from the carpark to the summit on the ascent.
We rested awhile and enjoyed the beautiful panoramic views... See Bluff Knoll II photo page....then one of the biggest moments in my 3 decades or so of life so far....felt about as nervous as a National Championships race...Changed into jacket, shirt and tie, and "popped the question" UTG! Kl said yes,she is now officially my fiancee and we will hopefully live happily everafter...
Then we hotfooted it down the mountain in 64minutes 35, which was absolutely "warp 9 captain"/terminal velocity etc etc for my poor torn ACL in knee...Total time of ascent+descent; 2 hours 27 minutes of bushwalking.
It was necessary to make a speedy descent as we left the summit at 1900hrs (7pm WST), and similiar to one of my Toolbrunup climbs, we were racing the night darkness on the way down...I did have a torch, but didn't have to use it, as the Bluff Knoll path is very well maintained, and there was enough residual sunlight (leftover from the sunset) still wafting around the western peaks of the Stirling Ranges near Albany, for us to just make out the steep track we were traversing down. By the time we made it to the carpark it was after 2000 (8pm), no sunlight at all, and dark enough to make out the "saucepan" pattern of stars in the sky. Pretty romantic stuff....a very special day and night, and weekend for me and KL...Could quite possibly be one of the top 10 most special times in a lifetime I think for us both...

Friday 2/12/05 8.30pm; Ran for 35 minutes 35 relaxed pace. A night run from Hillarys Boat Harbour. While the girlfriend was busy with a work dinner, I took the opportunity to grab a run session. Really enjoyed my run which wen out past the WA fisheries office, along the North Groyne? past Spinnakers Cafe which I had never come across before, all the way to a lighthouse, which I ran up the steps to the viewing platform. Exploring part done I got off the road surface and ran on some softer terrain, the grassy slopes of Whitfords Nodes park where I had my 30th Birthday last year. Scared about 20 rabbits or so, it was such a funny sight seeing all these rabbits scattering helter skelter in front of me as I ran through the park. the ran back past Portofinos continued up past Sorrento Beach a bit then back to my car near Portofinos. nothing incredible but a very enjoyable run, it felt soooo good to be out there and I feel strong. Feel like I am moving well when I am running....

Underoath reinventing your exit etc...

Have not done anything not a single session in the first 3 days of this week, been too busy recovering from Recon Run #2, and visit to Ironman at Busselton, plus celebrating 7 months with KL...and dealing with various other work stuff...Its been a very big week so far and promises to continue to be extremely busy just one more day of work left for this week. TGIF!...Some interesting developments to do with 6 inch this week too... Hope to dust off the runners or jump on Dad's mountainbike soooooon!....

Recon Run #2

Sunday 27/11/05-Ran about 28km altogether, about 2 hours 54...Time and distance very! approximate....Very messy and a bit of disaster initially as I spent the first 90 minutes running and walking on the Munda Biddi and Scarp Rd, trying to find Daves campsite, visiting his campsite, and then getting some of my gear back to the car (It started off being very cold and a big windchill factor, but by 0600 it was too hot to wear tracksuit pants and a jacket.) Then Dave and I set off from Whittakers following the MundaBiddi for about 7-8km and 40minutes at the turn, and finished back at Whittakers in 1 hour 24 minutes after about 14km.... posted by trailblazer777 | 23:22 | 0 comments links to this post

Four sub 4's in the twilight

21/11/05-Monday Ran 4x1km reps 3.53/3.57/3.54/3.58. Heart Rates at end of each one (using my usual 10 second carotid pulse routine); were 171/186/186/189. 5 minute rests. Average time 3.55.87 Total time for 4km; 15.43. My second best effort ever! for this particular session.
Started after 1900 so it was getting dark, and had to use the light on my watch to see my splits which were mostly very even (held back a lot on the first rep) with 500m splits all in the 1.55-2.02 range. Struggling a bit on the last one, so put the pedal utterly to the metal in the last 200m finishing my last 200m in 34 seconds, and my last 100m in about 15 seconds.
Was NOT feeling like doing this session for a lot of reasons, but it was actually a great way to release some of the frustrations of the day...so yeah I took out my frustrations on the poor unsuspecting reps...well something like that. Didn't have time to do a longer session really, and I felt I needed a speed session, so this was a good option, even though its probably one of the easier reps setups I have done...
Very happy with what I was able to do tonight! Good start to this week... posted by trailblazer777 | 22:16

MY VENTURE INTO THE WORLD OF BLOGGER... ...

This week I have now decided to use Blogger after being influenced by Plu and 2P at Cool Running, and I have to say its a whole lot quicker/easier to make regular posts given how busy I am now, plus its a faster loading page, but I still like my geocities one better so this will still be the main blog for me, But I now will be using my blogger version at http://runmara2005blog.blogspot.com/ for my posts in the first instance, and then transferring (with more detail and photos) to my main blog here each week or each fortnight depending on how busy I am...Here goes with the blogger experiment;
To Hillarys and back with or without the Southerly.
20/11/05-Sunday Cycled 36km on the mountainbike in 1hr 44minutes From Joondalup area to Hillarys Boat Harbour and back. Pushing into some tough southerly winds most of the the way in and absolutely flying! along at about 50-60km/h? on some of the way back, I splitted 54.22/49.46.
Rode the black repco bike I gave my Dad again....seems I am riding alot more than he is at present. Back was a bit sore I think from working hard up hills into the strong southerly headwind on the way in. The gears on the repco are a bit tricky so takes a lot of concentration to ride this bike well especially with the headwind/tailwind to adjust to, but the advantage is that this bike has large wheels, which means top gear has a pretty good top speed much better than my other bike I think. Will have to fit a speedo to the repco as well so I cam see what sort of top speeds I am hitting on this thing, cos it feels like "breakneck speed". Saw lots of Kitesurfers as I rode along the sunset coast cyclepaths taking advantage of the strong southerlys. This bike has a good bell which was very useful as i threaded my way through pedestrians and slow cyclists...trying not to run over anyone on the narrow cyclepaths.
Saw a dead tiger snake on Lakeside drive back in Joondalup. Pretty happy with that 36km ride, but I need to be doing something like this every second day I think from here on, plus start crankin out some 50km-100km stuff once a week I reckon in the late charge to 6-inch which is only a few weeks away now. posted by trailblazer777 | 13:17 | 0 comments
Tennis and 4km run with my sweetheart
19/11/05-Saturday AM; Did 300 Ab crunches while watching the cricket on TV. PM; A Quick hit of tennis at Arena Joondalup and a 4km run (partly on my Arena 2km course) with my sweetheart KL....About 57 minutes in total, with a short 15 minute break in between. Pretty low intensity for me, but a lot of fun, and KL was starting to hit a few good shots in the tennis...I think she has a killer forehand waiting to be unleashed. posted by trailblazer777 | 09:35 | 1 comments
Thursday, November 17, 2005 8km @ Arena
17/11/05-Thursday; Ran 8km in 40min 40 HR 180 by end on hilly! 2km course, with some very gusty southerlys Splits were; 9.17/10.26/10.51 &10.06 Tough to get out there and felt a little death incarnate afterwards, but very glad I made it tonight, feel so much better now...Onward... posted by trailblazer777 | 22:54 | 0

momentum...trying to build some... ...

15/11/05-Tuesday Ran 5.5km Good solid run with some faster surges thrown in. A night run (Did not start until 8.30pm), was reasonably warm/hot during day, and then I got sidetracked onto the computer. Would have run further but I only had about 30minutes to play with, had to get back home...Want some much better sessions this week, but its a start. Just got to make sure I build on it this week, and make the most of the fact that this a pay week, maybe get mountainbike fixed this time....

WEEK 2 (7/11/05-13/11/05);

Volume;303min Sessions; 4 Best RHR;48 Sleep;43.5 (6.21 hours per night) *59
OD/LSD/LFD sessions (Minimum 1 hour duration); Ran 12km (9/11/05),Ran 28km (12/11/05)

Reps sessions;NIL Ab Crunches; 250 (8/11), 350 (11/11)

Easing back into the Saddle......

7/11/05-Monday I was still a bit disorientated by Cobbler? venom, but got Tetanus shot from Doctor, and had him check the wound to make sure none of the barb was still in the wound. By evening felt ok....
8/11/05-Tuesday did 250 Ab (abdominal) Crunches, meant to train but didn't get to it.
9/11/05-Wednesday; Ran a solid 12km in 71 minutes (just under 6 minutes per km), nothing incredible, but an important one to get on the board, plus it proved my foot was fully good to go and recovered from the Cobbler incident on Sunday. Had a pretty special night with KL afterwards.
10/11/05-Thursday; Cycled 18km in 51 minutes again on my Dad's black Repco (the mountainbike I got him), since my normal bike still needs repairs. Its a faster bike, almost (or perhaps is) a hybrid, has very big wheels. My 11km split was a few minutes quicker than what I rode 11km in on Tuesday last week, but nowhere near flat out, just trying to get the system functioning well again after a tough day at work. I think it did the job.
11/11/05-Friday Did 350 Ab crunches after a work, felt very motivated especially once I cranked up the DemonHunter...Been getting into some POD (Fundamental Elements of Southtown) in the last few days, enjoying songs like Freestyler, Rock the Party, Southtown,bullet the blue sky, Set your eyes to Zion and Tribal Warrior...pretty aggressive hardcoreish/rapcoreish stuff (think Korn) which suits my mood, and the sort of mood I want this week....A bit short on time with a work get-together on this evening, and ran out of time to get a ride done. Planning to be at Dave's Recon run bright and early on Saturday, hopefully no Saturday sleep in for me this week, its ""Good morning Vietnam" at 0400 for me again for the the 5th day in a row (it would have been 6 days if I had not been off sick from work on Monday)...
12/11/05-RAN (6-inch RECON RUN #1) about 28km (2hours 41 minutes) on the gravel trails of the Mundi Biddi mountainbike trail from Dwellingup almost as far as Oakley Dam. (Oakley Dam was the final campsite, for the SU Hiking Camps I went on 1987-1990.) Click on photos or link to go to my page about these times.
.........
6-INCH RECON RUN #1 REPORT;Didn't get to sleep until 0045, so wake-up at 0345 was a bit savage. Drove to Dwellingup got there early at 0600 was able to get organised and relax a bit before the other three 6-inch aspirants arrived. Dave and I set the early pace for the first 30-50minutes, which at around 5.15 per km was fairly comfortable, we took one wrong turn near the Marrinup POW camp but corrected that quickly, and then mostly fairly straight-forward along the Mundi Biddi. When Dave had a pitstop, Nate moved to the front. saw some kangaroos, and the amount of shade from the trees was very welcome. We crossed two gravel "roads", I think Grey Rd and Scarp Rd? (have to check my Mundi Biddi Map 2), and also went past a campsite near the Marrinup POW camp. The campers there were probably still in their sleeping bags and tents, although they were up having breakfast when we came back. Dave and Nate went to the front of our group about 50 minutes in I think?...I dropped back with Gm, as the distance was starting to tell on me a little as expected (Have not run more than 12km since the Perth Marathon 3rd July 2005), and Dave & Nate started to pick up the pace a bit. Made the turn at 1hour 16minutes to start heading back to Dwellingup, a little after Scarp Rd I think... Struggled with the hills on the way back, ended up walking a bit here and there and by about the 2hours 15minutes mark, was slipping into "extreme shuffle mode"/walk zone. Ran with Gm quite a long time, as Dave & Nate, were about 5-15minutes ahead of us on the way back...Dave and Nate finished in about 2 hrs 27, and came back to encourage me and Gm in the last 5 minutes...At the end had some fun with a mock sprint finish with Nate, and pretending I was winning a big race.... My left knee was a little sore near the end, and I did ice it later that day, but ok I think....Had some interesting chats with Gm about using GPS for course measuring, race Tactics, training, my racewalking background, injuries, cyclists on the road, and so on...Its always good to have people to run with, and chat with, as it is a good motivation/encouragement to stick at it, and try and maintain running, when I really felt like throwing in the towel. Tough run, but very rewarding enjoyable, and a feeling of fulfillment. Very nice to get out in thew forest, away from city!!!! Big struggle to avoid falling asleep at the wheel on the way home, but I took breaks every 30-45 minutes on the long drive home, and made it, Thanks God! I think I will try and get KL to drive me home after the 6-INCH Marathon race in December. Now have a good mental picture of how the last 14km of the 6-inch will finish...
13/11/05-Sunday Quick 19 minute walk with KL near the railway tunnel.

WEEK 1 (31/10/05-06/11/05);

Volume; 183min Sessions;7 Best RHR;48 Sleep;41.25 (5.89 hours per night) *62
OD/LSD/LFD sessions (Minimum 1 hour duration); Cycled 22km

NovemBer...hopefully a New Beginning?...

1/11/05-Tuesday; 11km cycle on usual course (cycle path near Freeway). OK.
2/11/05-Wednesday; Ran about 8km-9km with Dave in Kings Park; 44 minutes...hill up to DNA Tower,(up DNA TOWER itself once) and 1xJacobs ladder before (1min 26), meant this was a pretty good run, with some solid uphill stuff and could feel it in the calves the next day...My sub-standard cardio-respiratory fitness was tested out by all the hills work, but you get that sometimes...Better off for having done it! Terrain/surfaces (mainly grass and trail) and views were excellent...
4/11/05-Friday; quick night run with my girlfriend KL.....
5/11/05-Saturday AM; Cycled 22km (60minutes) on Burns Beach course, which has some good ocean views...headwind/tailwind..important session.....
5/11/05-Saturday PM; Ran 1 mile at night on the ArenA Joondalup Track (4 laps of 400m track) with my girlfriend KL....
6/11/05-Sunday AM; Ran 3.5km course and did a PB by 28 seconds for that course, (getting Heart Rate to 183 by end)...Wuhoo!....
6/11/05-Sunday PM; Caught a few waves with KL at North Mullaloo Beach until I stepped on a Cobbler?, (spiky Catfish etc) which put venom into my system, and gave me severe pain for about 5-6 hours...Put foot into hot water for 4 hours, and then switched to hot water bottle for 2 hours. Felt rather disorientated by Cobbler venom, slept 10 hours that night, and got Tetanus shot at the Doctors the next day

Towards 6-inch Track Marathon...(45km on steep! gravel tracks)

October 2005 review;In recent weeks; Did one 40km cycle, ran a solid 7km & 8km on consecutive nights, did a few 11km cycles, lots of 3.5km runs, also ran with S near North Beach, and took K through her first ever experience with reps sessions. She has got me doing some Ab-crunches again in the last 2 weeks. Did 150 at 0330hrs before work on 25/10/05. Abs work is good for my back and have not done any for about 6 months, so hopefully can build some momentum with that. tried out some gyms, but I dont like the environment, I prefer to be out in the fresh air.
Have struggled to adjust to 4am wake up 5 days a week for work, still going to sleep at 2300hrs-0000 for 4am wakeup which means 4-5 hours sleep on most nights. Have to get to sleep earlier somehow and get sleep average over 6 hours a night.Pretty keen to get my main mountainbike operational again. Just been way too busy with various stuff also.
Biggest concern though is some injury niggles with my left foot since the Rottnest 10km.
23rd October 2005;Raced the Rottnest 10km Funrun to finish 50th of 215 in 46 minutes 54. Two photos coming soon. Really nice to see girlfriend K improve her 5km time on the much tougher Rottnest course! Watched D improve his marathon time, and N do his debut marathon (3.44!) all on the same day!
1st & 2nd October 2005;Did 10 hours of Hiking with my girlfriend and my Rottnest Marathon friends on the Bibbulumn Track. However have decided against a last minute charge at Rottnest Marathon 2005, its just been too hard to train in recent months, so just going to take it easy with a 10k, cheering on my friends, and helping my girlfriend improve her 5k time....Only other marathon possibility for me this year is Dave's inauguaral off-road 45km '6-inch Track Marathon" on December 18th...(inspired by the 6-foot marathon in the Blue Mountains,NSW which we hear so much about on Cool Running)....So plan to reactivate my BLOG as I try to get training going again, ***consistently!*** in preparation for the 6-inch Track Marathon! wuhoo!...
Where to now?....

BUSY! with new job (40hours per week since 22/8/05), my girlfriend K (for over 5 months now), have done over $1000 worth of much needed repairs on my car! still not happy with it, and its essential for me to get to the 5am starts at work. The mountainbike is out of use for now, will fix it soon. Have recently bought some much needed new shoes. Can retire the pair I ran my first 3 marathons in. Tried out my new shoes in the 2005 City to Surf 12km on 28/8/05, did about 57 minutes.

WEEK 16 (25/06/05-03/07/05);

Volume; 554min Sessions;7 Best RHR;49 Sleep;47 *34

You can't go back, you can go on..........

Sunday 3/7/05; Ran Perth Marathon in 4 hours 2 minutes (5.44perkm)
(Half splits 1.45/2.16)...172nd of 277.

Great to see one of the legends from the WAMC messageboard out there, and Dr Dan also...Tough headwind as I expected from Raffles Bridge (31km) to Narrows Bridge (36km)...A bit warm at times, but overall apart from headwind for that 5km stretch, pretty good conditions....
10k split 45.48, 15k 70.42, 30k 2.41 36k 3.19...
Wonderful,special to have my girlfriend K and my brother from USA, as well as Dad there as my support crew, doing drinks, made the experience all the more special.....

Official results @ WAMC, photos @ fuse photography....

My lack of distance work and sporadic training in general mean't that by 18k-20k I knew the sub 3.30 was not going to happen...

Go HERE for weeks 1-16 of the 2005 marathon assault.

The first 4 weeks includes;
Reload,energize,onward.....My 9th Bridges 5km/10km (1997-2005).....waiting on today,
Mundi Biddi exploration....annihilating my corruption...freedom fighting....find my way back...
Weeks 5-8 includes;
when the sun sleeps, L.A. story, In death we rise, every breath you take, tribal warrior, freestyler, c'mon aussie c'mon...
No races in weeks 5 to 8, but 26km run and some good 4x2km reps sessions...
A good starting point/consolidation for my marathon training in these weeks..., plus the 2km reps very good for speed, getting used to running at just under 4minutes per km....or maybe just over... Weeks 9-16 includes; lots of stuff including my PB of 1.41 in the Freo Half Marathon, and the final few weeks of Prep for the 2005 Perth Marathon, where I struggled to get enough training done to nail my 3rd Marathon....

The "Pre-Season", final week;

13/3/05; Sunday; Raced John Forrest 12.6km Cross Country, did 68min. This race included a run up what they call "old faithful" hill, with about 3km to go, which is a very steep and long hill. The gravel track sections near the old railway tunnel were nice to run on, and the views were awesome! Nice peaceful place to run, really enjoyed it!
Saturday; Ran an easy 5k with Steve in very humid, and fairly hot conditions...and made sure we finished the last 1k strongly, so we both ended up with HR's in the 160's for the end, although most of the run was rather sedate, relaxed, I was talking all the way.
Since Thursday I have had badly bruised buttocks, i.e. Forrest Gump injury? :-)
(I jumped backwards into a car, when a dog went for me while delivering on Thursday night).
However with icing that several times a day, it seems to be sorting itself out in the last two days.
10/3/05; --No running yet this week...--Went swimmimg Monday,
--Tuesday/Wednesday spent a few hours walking up and down steep hills
doing deliveries (p/t work) been good! for the gastrocnemius (calves)and quads
...and probably didn't do general fitness any harm either, plus beaut! views of the lake! :-)
--Wednesday/Thursday been online for about 10 hours getting
this Blog up and ***running*** *LOL*
--nice to get a few posts in response to my posts on Cool Running (CR)...
--also got a phonecall from Dave, a mate of mine who did a 3.09 in his first Marathon last year,
he is planning on different races to me in the next few weeks...
--Have to get my Mountain Bike (MTB) fixed before Freeway BikeHike
which my mate Steve is also doing...
--have not been down to Tennis club for awhile, too busy with deliveries,
and not a lot of point until I have the money to become a member...
--Anyhow have to get in some good runs in the next few days, to consolidate the
-16k, -4x1k reps, & -4x200m+2x100m I did in the last 2 weeks...
Hope to start WEEK 1 of 16 week attack on 2005 Perth Marathon on a good note...

Time training per month

In the last 5 years (2002-2005), I have spent more time crosstraining (running,cycling, swimming, sports, hiking etc) than I have ever recorded before, which means my leg strength and physiology setup for endurance races is the best its ever been in some ways, just let down by my sub-standard cardio-respiratory system, and the knee injuries...
2005--360 hours (30.02hrs per month)
2004--416 hours (34.7hrs per month)
2003--269 hours (22.4hrs per month)
2002--162 hours (13.5hrs per month)
Many runners like to measure how many
KM (or miles) they cover in a week or a month.
I choose to measure my crosstraining in hours and minutes, as KM/Miles is not very meaningful for me as explained at the bottom of this table.

...updated monthly, sometimes more often
TIME Training 2005 A.D. = 360 hours
December 05.... 1309 minutes (21hrs 49 )
November 05.... 1023 minutes ( 17hrs 03 )
October 05.... 2123 minutes ( 24hrs 01 )
September 05.... 1032 minutes ( 17hrs 12 )
August 05.... 1176 minutes ( 19hrs 36 )
July 05.... 2123 minutes ( 35hrs 23 )
June 05.... 1724 minutes ( 28 hrs 38 )
May 05.... 2330 minutes ( 38 hrs 50 )
April 05.... 2652 minutes (44 hrs 12 )
March 05.... 3099 minutes (51 hrs 39)
February 05.... 1825 minutes (30 hrs 25 min)
January 05.... 1786 minutes (29 hrs 46 min

Reasons why I choose Hours and minutes rather than KM (Mileage)

Due partly to my injuries, and also because I have decided it is a better way to train (more variety psychologically, better balanced body, less chance of overuse injuries to name just a few reasons), things like cycling my mountainbike have become an important part of my training myself to improve my running times. Triathlon is a lot of fun, the biggest barriers for me are the cost of doing Triathlon, and my weak swim leg. Because cycling & other sports are a big part of my weekly lifestyle, I have decided to include them in my training as its obvious they have a significant positive effect on my fitness. It makes a lot of sense to me that since I keep my running to a minimum or close to a minimum level< I should measure my training in time not distance. Becuase you can go faster on a bike you cover more distance, so only time will allow you to compare. The other important factor is intensity. Heart rate is I think the best (although not the only indicator) or most useful indicator of intensity. Cycling and swimming have lower intensitities generally as a rule than running, so we should expect lower heart rates for training and racing in cycling or swimming than for running. Cycling is also little or no impact, which is very useful to combat injuries. The idea to measure training in time probably came to me from one of the books I read about this while studying Sports Science at Uni in 1996-1999.

Top 10 reasons to run a Marathon is an article HERE which I became alerted to by *Running chick with the orange hat*'s blog, who came across it on a rather funny/humourous BLOG called ;
The LONGEST Mile!

The Longest Mile is an online diary following the triumphs and travails of Ken Ottmar and Jon Segal, two overweight, out-of-shape, newspaper desk jockeys training for the brutal Big Sur Marathon. Come and taste the pain.

Here is another sample of the simply exquisite gems of wisdom on The Longest Mile, this one from Jon Segal;
"Last night was the final Big Sur Marathon Training Clinic and I won a prize for perfect attendance! Aren't I special? Yeeaaaahhh!
The topic of the clinic was final preparations, basically sketching out what we need to be thinking of on the day before the race.
My final preparations include:
1) Completing my living will. I don't want a feeding tube unless it delivers pureed Krispy Kreme donuts. Then I want three feeding tubes.
2) Completing my last will and testiment. I've already willed by most valuable posession: my Playstation 2. I hope my friend's thumbs can withstand the arthritis.
3) Carbo-loading. This is my favorite part. Pass the bread... pudding!
4) Staying off my feet in the two days leading up to the race. Isn't it ironic that my final prep for the marathon involves a reversion to my former lifestyle? I plan on taking to the couch with a vengeance, perhaps watching all three old Star Wars movies and then the first two Godfather films. "
So click on down to The Longest Mile and get inside the minds of some of the worlds intellectual (and physical?) heavyweights.

Could be just the training to get you into Mensa that you need. Enjoy! :-)
