Long term goals

Strongly subject to limitations like 1.when Christ returns 2.what is wise, right. 3.other important priorities 4. finances, time 5. management of injuries and health etc.

Ongoing Racewalking goals;

In 2000, Jon experienced three serious knee related injuries, The first one from May 2000 still requires an operation, the other two injuries occurred in October 2000 in a basketball game. An operation in December 2000 successfully corrected 1 of the injuries from October, and after a lot of slow rehab in 2001, by April/May 2001 some running was possible. The 2nd injury from October (a torn ACL) is still yet to be corrected although it doesnt seem to stop him running carefully in straight lines (i.e. no tight turns or jumping off that leg) and no racewalking either. The injury from May 2000 still hasnt been operated on (finding enough money AND getting time off from work is proving an elusive mix in the last 4 years), and this will probably be fixed some time in the next few years. The ACL problem is probably more of a priority if it can be fixed, especially as I get soreness from this one after long periods of running/cycling, have problems with going down steep downhill, which I noticed descending Bluff Knoll and Mt Toolbrunup, and whenever I go down stairs. The ACL problem also restricts my movement in a lot of other sports. (Neither of these injuries include the back injury which has been managable since 1996.) Therefore

Jon is out of action

as far as racewalking goes at this stage, and although I have made huge gains during 2002/2003, (see races 2001-2005, and stepped up the training volume considerably mainly with low intensity cycling,(see data3 page) and Track running pages..)I am still restricted in how much running I can do.....after an ankle injury in December 2003, also significant problems with medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints), or something similiar Feb 2004->May 2004....

Old (2000) racewalking goals;

May 2000---->Ongoing knee injuries (May and October 2000) have stopped me racewalking ever since....

L-R; Photo 1: Winning my first state title at Perry Lakes, Perth, March 1989 A.D.

Photo 2: In my first Australian Championship race as a 15 year old, Brisbane, March 1989 A.D.

Photo 3: About 30min after finishing the Australian 20km in Sydney at Stadium Australia, 26th February 2000. The backdrop is Stadium Australia.

Stan Jones, the 10th Australian Centurion was my coach from 1988-1993.

This photo of Stan was taken in 1993 at the Kewdale "factories" course
after I had won the state 30km in 2hrs 51 min at the age of 19.

Mr Jones is still the one I goto for advice on racewalking training, and a few times I have had a go at trying to train regularly with him, which has always been very good, but unfortunately due to various issues including;
1. Injuries; (1995-hip bursitis), (1996-back injury), (1998-ankle injury),
(2000/2001-3 knee injuries---2 of them in a basketball game in October 2000, and 1 that developed gradually from May 2000...)
2. Lack of commitment by me to training,
3. Me living away from the area (1994-1998),
4. Me losing motivation to compete and train and temporarily dropping out of racewalking (1994/1995 and part of 1999),
for various reasons, mainly financial,job,lifestyle related.
I have been unable to really be an athlete worth coaching in recent years...I dont regret one bit the privelege I have had of benefiting a great deal from Mr Jones' advice and coaching over the years. Mr Jones is an experienced and successful international athlete, coach and official, who I found was highly! regarded in Melbourne, and most likely in England/Europe. I only know about a few of his incredible achievements due to his modesty, and tendancy to focus on what one can achieve now, rather than on what has been achieved..........August 2001, while websurfing, came across his WA State M60 20km walk record of 1hr 55, which has stood for 14years...its online here?... (The WA Masters Athletics(Over 30 years of age) Website.) As of 2001 he is in his 70's now, and I have seen him around our suburb still!!! doing 20-30km training walks at around 6 min/km pace.....

UPDATE--2003...Stan won the gold in the M75 5000m Walk AND M75 10,000m Walk
at the Australian Masters Championships held in Perth, April 2003.
His "golden double" RECORD! times (33min and 68min)
were better than many in the M70 and M65 races.

He is a remarkable living legend and the only real coach
I have ever had or wanted.
