SpellingConsonants and vowels

There are two kinds of accents marks in Friulian: grave (à) and circumflex (â).

The grave accent is used:

1) in polysyllabic words which are stressed on the last syllable and end in a vowel

lui al viodarà

2) in polysyllabic words which are stressed on the last syllable and end in vowel followed by -s

patràs
crodarès
finìs
boboròs
catùs

3) in polysyllabic verb forms ending in -in, when the -in ending is stressed

nô o mangjìn
lôr a mangjin
nô o finìn
lôr a finissin

4) in some monosyllabic words where the spelling without an accent mark represents another word

lui al à 'he has' a (preposition)
(adverb) e la (article)

The circumflex accent is used:

1) on long vowels when they occur in monosyllabic words or in the last syllable of polysyllabic words

vocâl
frêt
inzignîr
disegnadôr
brût

2) in infinitives (and infinitives used as nouns) ending in accented vowels

imparâ
capî
