CHURCHILL FIELDS CLUB HISTORY

In 1945, during World War II, on the suggestion of Thomas McQuesten, three leaders of the British empire were honoured, when Hamilton parks were named after them. Westdale Park was renamed Churchill Park after Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965), England's prime minister from 1940 to 1945.East Green opened 1958

The original Strathcona Club, located in Hamilton's Victoria Park, began in 1917. When Strathcona closed in 1957, play was transferred to the new location in Churchill Park.

The Churchill Fields Lawn Bowling Club opened its first lawn bowling green in May 1958, and a second green (West Green) in the summer of 1960. A clubhouse for 200 people by architect Stanley Roscoe was built December 1958 to August 1959. The building was finished late, because of a serious fire on the construction site in June 1959.

Churchill Fields hosted the Canadian Championships in 1984 when its greens were rated at 14 seconds or faster.

Churchill Park actually belongs to the Royal Botanical Gardens, but the City of Hamilton has been allowed full use of it since May 24, 1966.

Churchill Fields was selected as Lawn Bowling venue for Hamilton's 2010 bid. Better luck in the 2014 Commonwealth Games!
