(1) William I, 'Longsword', Duke of Normandy, born ????. Married Sprota (Adela) of Senlis. Had son Robert I.

(2) Richard I, 'the fearless', Duke of Normandy, born 933 in Fecamp, France. Died November 20th, 996 in Fecamp, France. Son of William I and Sprota (Adela). Associated with an unknown woman, and had son Godfrey de Brionne.

(3) Godfrey de Brionne, born 953. Son of Richard I and Gunnor. Married a Countess, had son, Gilbert.

(4) Gilbert de Brionne, born ????. Son of Godfrey and a Countess. Married Emma of Anjou, had sons Richard and Baldwin FitzGilbert de Moers.

(5) Richard Fitzgilbert, born ????. Son of Gilbert and Emma. Married Rohese Giffard, had son, Gilbert. Richard, a lawyer, was the founder of the house of Claire in England. Richard also accompanied William the Conquerer into England, participating in the spoils of the Norman Invasion and the new and old dominions of his leader and kinsman. At the time of the Domesday survey he was called Richard de Tonebruge, now Tonbridge, in Kent, which town he obtained from the Archbishop of Canterbury in lieu of the castle of Brionne. At that time he held nearly 200 lordships in various counties, one of which was Clare in County Suffolk. After making Clare his chief seat, he was styled Richard de Clare. He or his son is said to have died in a skirmish with the Welsh, and was succeeded by his son Gilbert.

(6) Gilbert FitzRichard de Clare, born 1066 in Clare, England. Son of Richard and Rohese. Married Adeliza de Claremont, had daughter Alice and sons Gilbert and Richard. Besides being the heir of his father's English estates, he was also granted the lordship of Cardigan by King Henry I (1107-1177). He is the common ancestor of the two powerful Clare families -- the Earls of Hertford, Pembroke and Gloucester. He rebelled agaisnt the King William Rufus, and lost his castle of Tunbridge.
