81st FWA NEWSLETTER

WINTER 1999 EDITION

Purpose Of The 81st Fighter Wing Association &
A Warm Welcome

Bonded by patriotism and honorable service to country, members of the 81st Fighter Wing Association reunite annually to celebrate and remember fifty years of history of the great 81st FIGHTER ORGANIZATIONS. From WW II through the Persian Gulf War, the 81st Fighter banners waved high and strong. We will never forget our comrades, their families and their sacrifices.

The 81st Fighter Wing Association is uniquely structured as a tax exempt, patriotic organization. We keep those who are registered members informed with a QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER and over 17 Scrapbooks\Albums of the 81st from 1942 until disbanded in 1992. A small donation, which is tax deductible, helps defray the cost of mailings and postage. We have no paid staff. Volunteer members do all the work. Join the fellowship and celebrate the liberty and freedom you helped to assure.

Stu Stabley, 81st Organizing Committee and Director f86e51st@hotmail.com.

DEDICATION OF NEWSLETTER

It is my pleasure to dedicate this FIRST NEWSLETTER of the 81st Fighter Wing Assocation to FRANK AND SHARON PALMER. Frank and Sharon HOSTED the Seattle Reunion and did an OUTSTANDING JOB. They also served as my inspiration to get involved, again, with the 81st, after a 50 year absence. THANKS to their leadership we had a Great Reunion, we have an 81st Web Page, over 18 Scrapbook albums of the 81st from 1942-1992 and our first WINTER EDITION NEWSLETTER of the 81st FWA. Our membership, likewise, has increased dramatically. Thanks to two FINE PEOPLE.

CFW, Secretary to the 81st FWA

'THIRTY-TWO OF THE BEST DAMN FIGHTERS
FLOWN BY THIRTY-TWO OF THE BEST DAMN FIGHTER JOCKS
OF THE BEST DAMN FIGHTER WING OF THE USAF'

81ST FIGHTER INTERCEPTOR WING
RAF STATION BENTWATERS 1951 - 1954

The occassion of this fly-over was a visit to Bentwaters by the Duke of Edinburgh on May 22, 1953. Sixteen F-86's from the 91st were scrambled then joined by sixteen 92nd FIS F-86's from Shepards Grove for a 400 mph pass at 500 feet. Three F86's, two from the 91st and one from the 92nd created a sonic boom from 40,000 feet just as the last of the massed flight cleared the fence.

Pilots from the 91st were Barrett, Courtney, Butterfield, Krisle, Hagarty, Barnes, Eckman, VaMatre, Williams, Hoye, Herring, Perkins, Myers, Stabley, Gathercoal and Fortney.

From the 92nd were Owens, Ashcraft, Davenport, Doty, Fluitt, Leidy, Marsh, Massoni, Murrey, Roll, Watt, Whitford, Adams, Berg, Carney and Cook.

Creating the sonic boom were Pytel and Kirk from the 91st and Pile from the 92nd. Leading the scramble and fly-by was Sandy Moats.
