John Newton used to tell a whimsical story, and laugh at it, too, of a good woman who said, in order to prove the doctrine of election, "Ah! sir, the Lord must have loved me before I was born, or else He would not have seen anything in me to love afterwards." I am sure it is true in my case; I believe the doctrine of election, because I am quite certain that, if God had not chosen me, I should never have chosen Him; and I am sure He chose me before I was born, or else He never would have chosen me afterwards; and He must have elected me for reasons unknown to me, for I never could find any reason in myself why He should have looked upon me with special love.

A Calvinist Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
I am so thankful you saved me without any merit of my own. If I had had anything in me to commend myself to you, Christ would not have had to die for my sins. But it gives me great joy in my heart that you did it all. My salvation was all of you and I had nothing to contribute to it, and you chose me before the foundation of the world. If it had been left to me I would have chosen hell and never received you. A person cannot resist the Holy Spirit if you have chosen them.
This shows me how great you are and I can add nothing to your salvation. Nothing in my hands I bring, just to your cross I cling. I magnify and extoll you because you gave me your life and I shall live in your house from now and forever. Please bless and heal those you have brought to my heart and mind.
In Jesus name.
Amen.

An Arminian Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I thank you with all my heart that you gave me free will and I chose you. You are so great that you saw something in me you could use in your service. I thank you that you gave people the freedom to choose good over evil, my faith is my contribution in salvation when I was saved.
I am thankful for your attribute of foreknowledge, so that I was elected when you saw I was going to receive Jesus as my Savior.
I am also thankful you have made it possible for everyone to be saved and it is up to them: for you will never violate a persons freedom but let them decide to be saved. Although all will not be saved, they decide to reject you and not have eternal life. Christ's redemption only becomes effective when they accept Christ.
I know a person can resist the Holy Spirit and reject you, but all men are free to do so. I know that a person's will can limit the work of The Holy Spirit in this life.
I thank you for your part, you took the initiative, and I responded in faith, and a person is eternally saved if he perseveres to the end.
I pray that you bless all people everywhere equally because you love them all equally and you are no respecter of persons. You love them all. Heal those that need you to do so for you wish everyone to feel your healing hand. I pray this if it is your will.
In Jesus name.
Amen.
