Track 20 and 21 of 'How I got over CD 1' are definitely the same as track 10 of 'Complete Mahalia Jackson Vol. 1' (B/C above). They are

marked as alternate take on both CD's. Now, both claim that the other occurrence of this title is the master take. While track 11 of 'Complete

Mahalia Jackson Vol. 1' is really different in the second part and nearly half a minute shorter (D/E above), tracks 5 and 6 of 'How I got over

CD 1' (F/G above) are terribly close to tracks 20/21. Even when playing them side by side (by copying one to the harddisk on the PC) I've

not been able to make out any difference other than 5/6 being slightly shorter (3 seconds).

How I got over

I have 3 CD's and also the MC 'The essence of Mahalia Jackson' which all indicate to contain 'How I got Over' from this concert.

However, while these takes are stereo recordings, they are mono. Also, the audience and the atmosphere are rather that of a studio take!

Additionally, the track times of 6'40/6'43 matches better that of 00001A (6'38) while the original discography indicates 7'21 for 'I' and 'L'.

NOTE: This session is also shown in the Columbia files with a date of 26/2/58.

NOTE: While all tracks on A Mighty Fortress are in stereo, the last entry is monaural! As this is also the only take with piano and organ

only, it was most probably recorded a lot earlier, possibly even before the date mentioned in the Columbia file, as the most takes from 1958

are already in stereo.
