Project Linus
Is a non-profit volunteer organization that donates handmade
security blankets to children suffering from traumas or illnesses.
Young children struggling with traumatic situations such as child
abuse, fires, accidents, the loss of a parent, or serious illnesses
are often cold, in pain and afraid. To participate, make a
blanket 40" X 60", any pattern or color, and washable. It can
be knitted, crocheted, quilted, or sewn. The NeedleWorks at
Willow Oaks is a drop-off site for the blankets as well as for
fabric and yarns to make the blankets.
Salvation Army Bears
We are asking each member to make two outfits for the bears this year.
Knit or Crochet
Make two blocks 9 inches wide and 6 1/2 to 7 inches long.
Use stitches of your choice. Leave tails of yarn of ten inches at
beginning and end of work to use for joining. Join for two inches
at each shoulder leaving 5 inches for the neck. On the sides,
leave 4 1/2 inches open for the armholes. Join the remaining 2
or 2 1/2 inches together.
Sewing
Cut a 15 inch piece of fabric, selvage to selvage. Sew selvage
to selvage. This seam is the cent of the back. Fold down 1/2
inch for the neck. Zigzag on the edge to form casing for elastic.
Fold the piece into 4 sections. The seam should be the center
of the back. The side folds are for the armhole placement. Cut
armholes from just below the neck casing down 4 inches. Turn
edges under and zigzag to finish. Turn up the hem 1 inch and
finish.
Use a 12 inch piece of 1/4 inch wide elastic. Run through the
neck casing and stitch ends together.
Trim and decorate with ribbons, lace and buttons, etc.
The deadline for turning in outfits is October 25. We will dress
the bears at 9:30 November 9 - last minute clothing will be
accepted.
