Many people ask me "So when are you moving to Toronto."
Assuming that since I'm out now I would want to move to the gay mecca.
Surprisingly I'm enjoying myself here and don't really see the advantages of moving to Toronto.
Anyway the point of this site is to show that you can be queer and live and in a smallish town.
I've written for the Ontarion (the student paper) and id magazine a free weekly paper. A few months ago I curated and organized a screening of nine Canadian independent film and video works.
It was called "Invasion of the Small Town Queers: Plan B." Soon I'll have a page up with the poster for it and stills from some of the videos. It was a huge success for Ed Video (Guelph's artist-run media arts centre) and I think Guelph's queer community. More soon.
Including some of my articles on the Guelph music scene (Elizabeth Powell, Jim Guthrie Quintet, The Stewart Gunn Band, Pussy Chute and the Hubble). pics too.
A LIMP WRIST AND A PULSE
some selections from my regular column in The University of Guelph's student newspaper The Ontarion.
Frosh Guide
The first Limp Wrist written for a special frosh edition of the paper, mailed out directly to their homes.

Saving Ryan's Privates

I wrote this one about my favourite topic - movies. I had seen most of the summer blockbusters and just let rip.

Who are the people in your neighbourhood

Guelph has the honour of having two prisons. One located just beside the university. I used to tutor inmates so I've been through both of them. They are scheduled for replacement by the big MEGAJAILS thanks to Mike Harris.

Mondex is dead! Long Live Dawson's Creek

Mondex is the electronic cash that moved into Guelph for a while using this town as a test site (Guelph was also the test site for recycling and cable). It failed big time but there wasn't much dicussion about why it failed. Mondex made it seem that everything was fine but the fact is anyone in retail in this town could tell you no one used it. The paper received a few letters about this one. One from an
angry priest (I've also included my reply to him). Another letter writer was mad that I "outed" a fictious character..

Get on the Bus, Jus

Not a limp column-it's from the frosh guide from a year ago (I wasn't out yet). But it's a nice guide for any new Guelphites.

A shepard and some sheep

I wrote this after the murder of Matthew Shepard. I debated putting this one on the site cause every queer seems to have something to say about it. But many of them call for stronger hate crime laws which I do not agree with.

Hey Hey Ho Ho the bloody Guelph Socialists have got to go!

This caused a lot of commotion on the University of Guelph campus. I was threatened with a defamation of character lawsuit.
There are a lot of Guelph inside jokes in the first half (in the second half the "Guelph Socialists" itself is a Guelph joke). The Depends thing alludes to the lineups outside of Sun-Sun's every night when the bars close. Check out the FtheGSpage for continuing updates, and I'll be posting any letters from the Ontarion in the coming weeks.
id magazine
Where I presently work in production as an ad designer for id magazine. It's a weekly paper similar to eye or now magazine and it's available across Hamilton, London, Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph. I've written a number of articles for them-here my favourite.
Rufus Wainwright (cover story)
Talked to him last summer, good interview. We met up when he came through Guelph the first time and again when he came through opeing for Sloan. Nice guy and fantastic songwriter. Can you imagine our excitement at having this guy in our town?

Tom Green (cover story)

My second interview with him. One thing I regret about this article is not calling him again after seeing a really terrible act on his show.
You see I already had the article written for a week and a half, it was about all the critics who don't like Green and what a bunch of anal wankers they are.
Glory be, id then decided to put it on the cover that weekend. Friday night I'm watching with a friend who has never seem it before and WHAM! I saw a studio bit that confirmed every criticism I'd heard about the show. So, very last minute, I changed the entire article.
Anyway, if you don't like his show you should see him live. I've included a live review of his show at the Rivoli a few months ago. In conversation he's not a 'crazy guy' actually pretty laid back. Check out the
Tom Green Web site.

High School Hell

Someone commented "articles on queer high school students are so done." This person was from Toronto.
This topic has not been done in id nor has the issue been a concern for many of ids readers.
