Tuva

The Republic of Tuva in the Russian Federation is the former Tannu Tuva, a country in south Siberia absorbed by the former USSR in 1944. Before that, since 1924, Tuva was nominally independent. The region was previously known by the Mongolian name Uriankhai. Of 308,000 inhabitants, 64% are Tuvan and about 32 % Russian. The capital is Kyzyl. Tuvans speak a Turkic language (Tuvan) and are mainly Buddhists, culturally linked to the Mongols. There are also Tuvan minorities in Mongolia (24,700 or 1.3% of the total population in 1985) and around 400 people in China (1990). We have a couple of placenames for Mongolia below.
