Special characters

This section of GeoNative deals with accents, special characters, diacritic signs and transliteration systems. Many languages using latin alphabets use particular signs, and other languages use non-latin alphabets. How to display names in those languages here at GeoNative or elsewhere? There is the possibility of using special HTML encodings, but you need special software to view names encoded in that manner.

However, the pages at GeoNative are not encoded that way. Instead, they follow the most widely used standard [ISO/IEC 8559-1] of the WWW, also called Latin-1 character set.

So, we have opted to use the characters available in the HTML coding of Latin-1 (complete list available here), and when other characters appear, subsitute them with other conventions, as underlined text or characters with strokes.

Glossary of diacritics

We type those characters above just that way in GeoNative. For other characters that we cannot display, we substitute the undisplayable characters by others; for instance, [a + circumflex] instead of [a + breve] for Romanian. Otherwise we use HTML tricks as underlined text or characters with strokes.

Transliterations

When we deal with languages written in script other than Latin, we choose the transliteration or romanisation way. For instance, in the page for Kalmykia, a nation within the Russian Federation, we include the Kalmyk alphabet, the standard romanisation scheme used for it, and the conventions or adaptations added for GeoNative:

Most transliteration standards follow the guidelines of the Institute of the Estonian Language [http://www.eki.ee], designed for the KNAB Place Names Database proyect. Those are based mostly in the GOST 1983 standard, devised by authorities of the Soviet Union, sanctioned as an international standard by the United Nations UNGEGN conference of Montreal 1986.
