Endorphin Bath & Todd E. Jones presents....
Howard Turner
(on the recording sessions of "Headache Rhetoric")

(December 22, 1998)
"Here's a few thoughts re the Headache Rhetoric album (b4 I head off 2 bed).
It was an 'interesting' and tense series of sessions - I had been heavily involved with a bunch of recordings for Perfect Disaster (also signed 2 Fire at the time) and as a result of that Clive (the Fire MD) reckoned I could come up with a more 'solid'  sounding record for the Lobs.  However for some unknown reason he got Phil V  involved, who (despite being a top bloke), really was more in tune with people like Dave Edmunds (with whom he had recently been involved).  As a result, he rapidly alienated the Lobs by trying to 'straighten up' (i.e. commercialise in an 80's way) their groove.  This went down like a foreskin at a barmitzvah......

The next thing I know I am sitting in the studio to mix alongside Phil V with Clives  instructions ringing in my head (' don't let Phil mix it - make it sound like the Perfect Disaster stuff you have done - but don't let Phil realise you are subverting him....')
    Hmmmm.......
needless 2 say the session could have gone more smoothly......

    P.S.
I never heard the whole album, but I a) met the guys when they played Norwich the following year (when they were less than complimentary about Phil).  b) I still occasionally listen to the Cohen cover.  And c)  I nicked a vocal sequence about you've got a lovely......' repeated for a song on the first album for my band The Nivens ( www.studiowizard.com ) which we still play to this day.....

Also you might like 2 know that I had previously been involved with Pete Shelley  (Buzzcocks) and Pete De Freitas (Bunnymen) so as the guys say - what goes around comes around.

With regard to the Nivens - we are just about to become hip for the fifth time in our 13 year existence....."
