My Home State...

What's so great about Alabama?

My Alabama information and references primarily focus around the Gulf Coast area of Alabama because that's where I was born and reared.

• Mardi Gras!!! - My little page honoring Mobile's Biggest Party!

• Alabama - The country music artists.

• Fairhope - This is the city in which I work. A very important Fairhope event is the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival held in March of each year. It is sponsored by Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce

  If you ever come to Fairhope, you must indulge yourself and stay at Marriott's Grand Hotel Resort & Golf Club

  Or if a Bed & Breakfast is more your style, I recommend Bay Breeze and Church Street Inn. The gracious hosts of these fine B&B's are Bill and Becky Jones. Becky was my 10th grade biology teacher!

• Daphne - The "Jubilee City." This is the lovely little city I've called home for the past 12 years.
  

• Spanish Fort - I spent my teen years in this community which recently incorporated. It is only a couple of miles from Fort Blakeley, site of the last major battle of the Civil War.

  • Judson College - I think it only fitting that I begin this list with my alma mater.
  • University of Mobile - the alma mater of my brother, Jacques, and where I went to graduate school.

• Jimmy Buffett - grew up in Mobile and helped immortalize Alabama with his wonderful rendition of the song, Stars Fell on Alabama.

• Hank Aaron - a site dedicated to "Hammerin' Hank," a native Mobilian, and former Atlanta Brave, who hit 715 career homeruns.

  • Truman Capote - author of In Cold Blood, spent his childhood in Monroeville, AL.
  • Mark Childress - Born in Monroeville, AL. I've never read one of his books. I guess I should since he was born in Alabama and I taught his children!
  • Zelda Fitzgerald - wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald and author of Save Me the Waltz.
  • Fannie Flagg - author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe was born in Birmingham, AL.
  • W. E. B. Griffin - pen name of the Alabama resident William E. Butterworth III who writes adult military fiction.
  • Winston Groom - author of Forrest Gump. There is not much information on the 'net about Mr. Groom, but I know that he lived in Fairhope, AL, for a while.
  • Carson McCullars - author of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter
  • Margaret Mitchell - author of Gone with the Wind.
