Abraham Hendrickson Wright & Sarah Jane Haines

Their story as their grand-daughter remembers it

My grandparents, Abraham Hendrickson Wright and Sarah Jane Haines Wright, parents of my mother, Daisy Alice Wright Horton.
Sarah and Abe came to Kansas from Indiana in 1875 in a covered wagon with a baby, Carrie, and another one on the way. They bought 160 acres of land, a timer claim 2 miles north of Abbyville from a discouraged homesteader.
The timber, 10 acres of cottonwood trees, lived for at least 85 or 90 years. Three of my friends, Elsie, Erma and Jewell had an annual weiner roast there after walkin the 2.5 miles from school and before an overnight slumber party at my house.
Abe & Sarah had seven more children in Kansas, John, Jesse, Charlie, Flora & Cora(twins), Daisy and Walter. Charlie died of whooping cough at 2.5 months. Grandma's sister Teresa, and her children brought it from Indiana when they came by train for a visit. Grandma mourned for Charlie the rest of her life (she told me the story) and never forgave Teresa's children for bringing it to Kansas. Charlie was buried on the farm and his grave is lost.
Grandpa prospered and trhough hard work bought more land. Before he died he gave each of his children 80 acres. Mother's land was about 4 miles south of Sylvia and Dad farmed it for 60 years. After harvest we hauled the wheat by horse and wagon. Dad shoveled it out of the granary on the 80. Dad and I cooked over a bonfire and slept on the ground.
When Grandma died each heir got 80 more acres. Mom got 70 acres across from the home place. Drainage has changed through the years and the last end is covered with water. Clara, Rosemary and I still own this, but all the otehr heirs have sold theirs. I had 27 Wright first cousins. Am still in touch with 3 of Flora's childre, Alice, Ruby and Mildred.
