She looked at her baby and whimpered,
Her eyes were filled with tears,
She looked bemused,
Bewildered.
Why was he like this?
Why?
His face all wrinkled,
His hair grey as though with age,
His skin hanging like a limp cloth,
Yet still a baby,
Her baby,
Why?
It was not her fault her breasts were empty,
That she had no milk.
The fields were barren,
There was no corn,
Nothing,
Nothing but cracked, bare earth,
Great yawning gaps crying for water,
And there was none.
Why?
Perhaps God was angry?
Those people across the sea,
Their babies did not cry,
Unceasingly,
Tearlessly.
They laughed, and played, and gurgled,
Well fed,
Bonny.
What had her people done,
That they should suffer,
And watch their babies die,
Dying now?
Why?
God looked down at her baby,
His eyes were filled with love,
Concerned,
Thoughtful.
Why was her baby like this?
Why?
His Son too had suffered,
Tortured,
Pained,
While people worshipped,
Feasted,
Had no time to care.
He knew why.
