ISU Forestry Tree Identification

GRADE LEVEL: Elementary-High School; Secular

Comments: At this site you will learn about the trees found in Iowa. What? You don't live in Iowa? Oh well...you can still get an idea on how an interactive tree identification system answering short questions about a sample leaf,  you can narrow the field until you have hopefully identified the tree it comes from.    Since many of the trees found in Iowa are found elsewhere in the U.S.,    this site is still useful.    Also at this site you will find links to help you learn HOW A TREE GROWS and a glossary giving DEFINITIONS OF SPECIAL TERMS USEFUL FOR TREE IDENTIFICATION.

What's It Like Where You Live?--THE TEMPERATE DECIDUOUS FOREST

GRADE LEVEL: Elementary-High School; Secular

Comments:    Links to the following topics:   (1)  What's a Temperature Deciduous Forest Like?,   (2)  Where Are They Located?,  (3)  Story:     The Meaning of Fall ,  (4)  Tree Finder:    Leaf ID Guide,  (5)  What Colors Are Certain Leaves in the Fall,  (6)  Autumn Leaf Scrapbook,   (7)  Why Four Seasons?,  (8)  Forest Animals,  (9)  Other Temperate Links.

There is alot here and even high school biology students would benefit from this site.     Works best with NETSCAPE...I kept getting Java Script errors for the left-side index and they never did appear.    I guess you could just hit the empty picture and see where you wind up!

WebGarden

GRADE LEVEL: Middle School-High School; Secular

Comments:     Access the following databases from this site:    (1)   Plant Dictionary   (2)   Factsheet Database   (3) Buckeye Yard and Garden onLine   (4) Weekly Gardening News for Central Ohio  (5) The Landscape and Nursery Dialog   (6) Ohio Master Gardener.

I looked up the general word   "Christmas cactus"   in the Factsheet Database and the first link I was provided with gave me detailed information about how to care for that cactus at home! Look up information on ANY flower, grass,  bulb...you name it! Look something up by common or scientific name or by region...many times pictures of the plant are shown too.  It would be good to look at this site if you have a student in biology or if you are doing a class garden and need specifics on proper care of a certain plant.
