Micmac

There are around 6.000 speakers of Micmac in Canada, in the Gaspé peninsula of Quebec, in coastal areas of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, and also in Newfoundland Island. Their own ethnic name is Mi'kmaq. Micmac is an Algonquian language-

We have 3 lists, one for Quebec, N. Brunswick, N. Scotia and P.Edward island, which is not of reliable ortography . The lists for Newfoundland and St. Pierre & Miquelon are correctly spelled. Correct Micmac is written using one special, a slash i, character that equals a long [i], written here as [ i ].

Mi'kmaq

Mikmak herria Kanadako eki-hegoaldean bizi da, eta 6.000 hiztun inguru daude. Quebecen 770 hiztun daude, gehienak Gaspé penintsulan, eta gainerakoak bizi dira New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island eta Nova Scotia probintzietako itsasaldean, eta Ternua uhartean. Beren hizkuntzan (familia algonkiarrekoa) beren izena Mi'kmaq idazten da.

Hiru taula ditugu guk hemen; lehena Quebec, N. Brunswick, N. Scotia eta Prince Edward Island-erako, zalantzazko ortografiekin. Aldiz Ternua eta St. Pierre & Miquelon-erako ditugunak zuzen idatzita daude. Mikmak zuzenza zeinu berezi bat erabiltzen da, [i] luze bat adierazteko, hemen marraz gurutzatua ageri dena: [ i ].

Micmac and Basques

There are documented contacts between Basques and indians of this area (Abnakis and Micmac) around 1600. It is possible that they used a Basque-Indian pidgin (check it in another page) to trade, and there are traces of Basque words in a documented Micmac-pidgin. There are also remnants of Basque presence in Newfoundland, as in Port-aux-Basques, and in St. Pierre and Miquelon (see below).

Mikmakak eta Euskaldunak

Bada Mikmak lurraldeetan "Escuminac" deritzon herri bat: etimologia indiarra ote, edo euskalduna akaso? Izan ere, 1600. urtearen inguruan euskaldunen eta indiar hauen artean (Mikmak, Abenaki) kontaktuak izan zirela dokumentatua dago, eta litekeena da haien artean pidgin euskal-indiar bat erabiltzea. Micmac-en hizkeran ba omen daude euskarazko aztarnak... Bestetik, Port-aux-Basques Ternuakoa ere Micmac lurraldeetan dago. St. Pierre eta Miquelon uharteetan ere bada euskaldunen oroitzapenik.

Saint-Pierre & Miquelon

These two islands are french territory, one of those overseas colonial possesions of France. There were part of the Mi'kmaq range, but now they are inhabited by 6,000 french-speaking people. Most of them are descendants from Basque and Breton migrants.

Saint-Pierre eta Miquelon

Bi uharte hauek kolonia frantziarra dira, itsasoaz gaindiko DOM-TOM lurralde horietako bat. Aspaldi Mikmak herriaren lur eta uren barnean zeuden, baina orain 6.000 "frantses" bizi da han. Horien arbaso gehienak, ordea, ez ziren frantsesak, baizik eta euskaldunak eta bretoiak.
