Sayings of the pious
I have known people and kept company with groups who neither rejoiced
when the things of this world came to them, nor grieved when they lost anything in this world. The life of this world was more
insignificant to them than dust. One of them might live for a year or for sixty years without ever having a garment that would
entirely cover him, and without ever having anything that would come between him and the ground, and without ever having any
food that he could ask to be prepared for him in his own home. When night came, they would be on their feet, with their
foreheads flat against the earth, tears rolling down their cheeks, secretly calling on Allah to save them on the Day of Judgement.
If they did something good, they never stopped being grateful for it, and they were always asking Allah to forgive them for it.
By Allah, they were not safe from wrong actions, and were saved only by their constant turning in repentance. May Allah be
pleased with them and grant them His mercy".
Al-Hasan Al-Basri
What have I to do with people , I was in my father's "back-bone" (sulb)
Alone..then I
became Alone in my mother's womb. Then I entrered the world Alone. Then
my soul will be taken Alone. Then I will be lowered into my grave Alone.
Then Munkar and Nakir will come to me and ask me Alone. If I proceed to good
, I will proceed Alone and then my deeds and sins Alone will be put on the
scale . If I am sent to Paradise , I will be sent Alone and if I am

I have seen wrong actions killing hearts, And their
degradation may lead to Their becoming addicted to
them. Turning away from wrong actions Gives life to the hearts, And
opposing yourself is best for it.

This Quran guides you to the recognition of your illnesses and to their
remedies. Your illnesses are your
sins, and your medicine is seeking Allah's

A believer finds no comfort except in meeting his lord, thus, should he experience such comfort, it means
that he has attained that goal.
`Abdullah bin Mas`oud
Do not ask the son of Adam to fulfill a need. Ask Him whose gates are
never concealed. Allah is wrathful
when you do not ask him, While the son of Adam is angered

Be content with what you have, be satisfied with your dewelling
place to accomodate your enterprise,
restrain your tongue, and shed tears of regret regrading past
sins you commited knowingly, and those you
do not recognise.
`Abdullah bin Mas`oud
Do not censure something which has no immediate link to your interest. Forsake your enemies, and
beware fo your close companions, except for the trustworthy ones, for nothing equals the worth of a
trustworthy companion. Do not mix with an insolent person lest he influences you with his contumelies.
Never trust such a person with your secret, and solicit advice only from the God-fearing people.

Follow the coherence in your heart, beware of anything towards which it feels despondent, and disregard
what it declines to concur with.
`Abdullah bin Mas`oud
I would love to have already met my Lord had it not been for three blessings in this world - that is :
1) To postrate my forehead on the ground beofore Him.
2) To sit in gatherings that favour the good word, whixh is like opting for the better dates on a
platter.
3) And finally, for the oportunity to fight in His cause, to proclaim His word, and to establish his
religion on earth.
Omar bin Al-Khattab
Ones heart sometimes feels a strong yearning and responsiveness, and yet, at other times. it feels waning
and disengaged. Take advantage of its responsiveness when inviting, and disregard what is offered when
your heart feels dispondent.

He who knows not and knows that he knows is a fool. Shun him. He who
knows not and knows that he knows not is ignorant. Teach him. He who
knows and knows not that he knows is asleep. Wake him. He who knows
and knows that he knows is a wise man. Seek him. Anonymous
I looked at all friends and did
not find a better friend than safeguarding the tongue. I thought about all
the dresses but did not find a better dress than piety. I thought about
all sorts of wealth but did not find a better wealth than contentment in a
little. I thought of all sorts of good deeds but did not find a better
deed than offering good advice. I looked at all types of sustenance but
did not find a better sustenance than patience.
Umar (RAA)
Five are the marks of
Allaah-fearing people. They do not associate with people other than those
with whom they can maintain terms on a religious basis; they restrain
their private parts and their tongues; when they make any large temporal
gain, they take it as a curse, and when they gain even a little piety,
they consider it precious; they do not eat to their full even of what is
permitted for fear that anything forbidden might be mixed with it, they
consider all people pious and pardoned, but consider themselves as
sinners.
Uthman (RAA)
Had there not been five bad
qualities, all the people would have been righteous. Contentment with
ignorance; love for worldly life; miserliness inspite of much wealth;
ostentation in (good) deeds; and pride in their own intelligence.
Ali (RAA)
Whoever
does five things is fortunate in this world and in the Hereafter. :
Reciting Laa ilaaha illallaah Muhammadur-Rasoolullaah;
Inna lillaahi wa
inaa ilaihi raaji'oon when any mishap befalls them;
saying laa hawla wa
laa quwwata illa billaahil 'azeem - alhumdulillaahi rabbil alameen when
any gift is bestowed upon them;
saying bismillaahir-rahmaanir-raheem when
beginning any work;
and saying astaghfirullaahil 'azeem wa atoobu ilaihi
when any sin is noticed.
Abdullaah ibn 'Amr ibn Al-Aas (RAA)
None in this age will
amass wealth except those having five traits ofcharacter. High hopes;
abnormal greediness; excessive miserliness, lack of fearing Allaah; and
forgetfulness of the coming world.
